Hi... have a friend in USA wanted to remove W7x86 Ultimate and instal x64 Ultimate. Didn't have onough free space on other drives to transfer her Modelling videos and Portfolios to and didn't know how to ceate a partition on C drive to be able to save her data
She needed 25GB free usable HD space to be able to save her data and then instal W7x64 Ultimate to the C Drive.
I guided her through Disk Management on how to create a partition in C Drive. Here is where I have the query.
C Drive had 47GB unused space, whe tried to create a 30GB Partition from the free 47GB, Disk Management would only permit a partition size of 12.9GB So I thought we create that 12.9GB Partition, transfer data from C Drive to the new partition thereby freeing space in C drive
into which another 10GB-12GB Partition could be made. Disk Management wouldn't allow that to be done. She had to settle for the 12.9GB Partition E created in the Main HDD. Other data she wanated to save she had to cram into her external HDD after deletong data she decided she could do without.
Right si that;s all the info and the query is : Why would Disk Management not permit a 30GB Partition be created for 47GB of available space? The reason it showed was " You cannot shrink a volume beyond the point
where any unmovable files are located. See the defrag event in the Application log for detaled information about the when it has completed"
"Beyond the point where unmovable files are located"........... ummm how can there be unmovable files in free space on a hard drive> Surely those unmovable files that prevented the creating of the 30GB partition must be filling 34GB of the visibly usable free space. 47GB - 13GB = 34GB

2 pics , 1st shows the info about cannot shrink beyond point of...….. 2nd shows completed partition creation with the data moved to it and her Drives in computer.... How she managed to have 20GB free space in the external drive after she did the creating if E partition I do not know because when I had seen it last it was crammed full and showing the danger sign of the drive status in RED
She went ahead with the Installation of W7x64 Ultimate to C Partition and is happy as Larry... with a whole lad of Installing progs/Updates etc etc to do now. :D

Thanks in advance for answering my question about the cannot use all of what I see I have because I don't have it.:confused:

1461080 2019-05-31 00:37:00 use a partition manager program , either run from a bootable CD or installed & will reboot & do it before win loads

There may be locked system files sitting in the location you want to shrink.

Actually, the BEST way is to have a single partition , rather than split up HD's & not be able to manage the then small partitions

If your friend is going from 32 to 64bit Win, they MUST MUST MUST backup first.
Dont just assume data on another partition or connected HD will be safe .

1101, hi and thanks. Yep I was attempting to tell her to download Easeus Partition Manager Home version and use that to try to create the 30GB Partition. I have always used Easeus for that sort of work...but alas she had ripped ahead of the guide showing the way and carrying the lantern and done the partition creating and moving of data to it. I walked away from computer when she had ploughed ahead on her own and went town for 3 hours. She had done it all when I had returned. And as I said, the 20.9GB free space on the external HDD was not there before I went to town and if it had been well she could simply have sent the data she wanted from the C Drive (or the E) drive to that 20.9GB Space on the external HDD, wiped C clean and then installed W10 x64 to unallocated Space on the C Partition. it is all done now.... she installed W7 x64 about 5am NZ time and is downloading updates and installing Progs etc...that she now has to get the 64Bit versions of.

Cheers

1461082 2019-05-31 02:32:00 Hard drives don't fill up and empty like a bucket leaving all the free space in one continuous area, it's more like a giant game of Jenga leaving random holes all over the place. The windows disk management tool has very limited partitioning skills and will not move files around to create a block of empty space so it will only let you use however much is currently available in one continuous block.

These are tiny partition sizes you are talking about though, you can get a really cheap 32GB usb flash drive that could back up all of what you are talking about.
That would be my advice, back it up, wipe the drive, start again. Or even better if possible, buy a cheap SSD, install windows on that, put the old drive away somewhere as a backup or put it in an enclosure.

Then again unless she has more than 4GB of RAM there's not much point in switching to x64.

1101 :D yeah, she knew nought, this went on for a couple hours before I left her to it :D bits I omitted were, she was telling me she could upgrade 32 bit to 64 bit and keep all her data and we all know ya can't do that :D she sent me pic of her attempt install 64 bit ..the pic that gives option to Upgrade or Custom install and insisting I am wrong because she can click to Upgrade :D sigh...… after having gone from lowercase to Massive Uppercase after 5 times telling her it meant that the Upgrade means she can Upgrade to a Newer - Higher version of W7 than she had installed and as she had 32 bit Ultimate well she ain't upgrading to a Higher version of W7 :D So the beat went on... once she realised I was correct and was showing her via internet FB Messenger how to use Disk management, these things happened: She created the 12.9GB partition, moved data to it from the C partition and then tried to create a new 12.9 GB partition, that was a no go... so data got sent back to the C partition., new partition deleted, C partition Extended to use all unallocated space and have 1 partition, then a new partition we tried to create and attempted to enter 30000MB in the Shrink by amount box and that was no go.. I skip details on that :D then as I was suggesting we /she gets easeus free partition manager she had ripped off with the knowledge she now had and I already told ya the rest :D ummmmmmm… its kinda hard trying to help a person who...ummmmm...is a desperate neurotic and an I want it all and I want it NOW!!! kinda gal :D Best to walk away and go have fun instead of losing me marbles to a headstrong German-American chic :D hahahahahahah
Cheers :D

dugimodo, hi . Thanks for the info about scattered files etc... perhaps a defrag would have gotten a larger permitted partion create size. My HDD's were always defragged auto by use of O&O Defrag Pro v20 ( I don't use it on my SSD's) and I only use it now to do external HDD's , once a month or 2. Her computer has the resources to run 64 Bit W7.... CPU is AMD Phenom II X4 955 Deneb 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processo and 8GB RAM.... I not sure of the Speed of it or if its DDR2 or DDR3...…. probably DDR3..... AMD Graphics card for which she had to dload/install some AMD Catalyst Instant Manager so its all go go for her. In fact, I not heard from her since she installed Google browser and then sent me a pic showing Chrome.exe*32 opened 12 times (in Task manager), asking what it was , well by the time I had started to explain she had decided its a virus and set about getting rid of it. I left her to it :D She also had to get an app called LightShot she used before and Adobe PShop 2018 x64 etc and mucho more...but she is happy enough at last I heard.... when and if a prob happens or a question needs an answer I will get a Hello Garry...in my FB Messenger box :D
Have a nice day
Garry
