1225522 2011-08-24 05:19:00 Have HP Photosmart printer C5180

Said Black was empty and to change so did. After a few pages (presume that was left from little ink reservoir ) the black has stopped printing, and am getting just blank pages. Empty cartridge was a non HP and so was replacement but different type. Tried replacing with new HP one still won’t print.

Did Clean print heads and Align printer, got an error msg on last one “print cartridge alignment failed”

Google and tried this: Pull out power plug when on, then replug in will holding OK and Help. Think it reconfigured it. (I Picked USA for all options)

Did not work still no black, plus printer gives me new message “You can insert a memory card to print photos with no computer”. Never had that msg before.

Is there something I should physically do to printer heads or cartridges?? The pins look okay
Any one any idea??

1225523 2011-08-24 05:59:00 Did you remove the cartridge and then put it back in? Is it set in correctly? Is it a recharged cartridge and if so have the contacts been damaged? Bryan (147)
1225524 2011-08-24 06:09:00 Hi Bryan, both new cartridges no recharges. The contacts presume you mean the copper plate look fine, and so do pins inside printer ktee (5538)
1225525 2011-08-24 06:10:00 I recently had a problem with black ink cartridges for an Epson ... NOT original Epson but purchased off Trademe. Although I purchased 3 x colour - 2 x black, only had problems with the black ... seller replaced both black without question and replacements worked OK.

Not sure if you're in a similar situation though.

1225526 2011-08-24 06:55:00 yes I thought it could be that, but then tried the new HP and syill wouldnt go. Unless the other one did something to it ? ktee (5538)
1225527 2011-08-24 07:28:00 Hi Ktee

Sometimes the new print cartridges can be a bit reluctant to start. The easy fix for this is to dampen a piece of paper towel and place ink cartridges on top. Leave for a couple of seconds, then take them off. There should now be black ink marks on the tissue.

Make sure the paper towel is only slightly damp, ring it out if necessary.

1225528 2011-08-24 07:49:00 I do wonder if the message about being able to print without a computer connected may reflect some isse with communication between the printer and the computer.
Seems very unlikely to be the issue, but you lose nothing by unplugging and re-plugging the data cable between them both, at both ends of the cable too.

I'd consider dropping a single drop of water onto the outlet of the cartridge to see if that encourages flow too.

I'm assuming this HP variant has the print heads in the cartridge.

1225529 2011-08-24 08:22:00 No connection issue All the other colours print, its just a blank where the black should be on test pg. And it makes all the little printing noises on the paper.
Tried damp paper towel, nothing came out for either new black cartridge. Did a few bang, one ting pinhead mark. Soooo stuck a pin in each one lttle bit odf resistence on one, but result was needle coated in ink for both cartrdges. on paper towel again, still had to bang. now get bigger mark but only for one cartridge. not sure about the printheads. its those vivera cartridges with copper plate on back.
now off to get some water (Each cartridge has 2 holes)

1225530 2011-08-24 08:34:00 Tried drop of water, bit ink showed on 1 hole out 4. Tapped on bit of paper nothing no ink coming out ktee (5538)
1225531 2011-08-24 21:36:00 Do these cartridges have a label that needs to be removed to allow air into the cartridge?

To get ink out you need to have air getting in somewhere. On my Canon carts it's a winding air path, most of which is hidden beneath the label on the top.

If the air channel is too short or direct there may be more chance of the ink drying out inside the cartridge.
