| 1198076 | 2011-04-29 01:25:00 | Quotation from a press release by the new Police Commissioner, Peter Marshall this morning: I authorised expenditure of approximately $5.5 million on outfitting all "response" vehicles and road policing units with safes for carrying a Bushmaster rifle, Glock pistol, Taser and two sets of ballistic armour. This will start immediately but full implementation will take months. Extra firearms will need to be bought and imported. Many staff will require additional training. I want officers to have immediate access to such weapons should dire circumstances occur. This does not signal a ramping-up of our approach. We have a proud history of negotiation and interaction with offenders and that will remain our primary approach. There will not be routine carrying of Tasers at this stage - but I'm not ruling it out in future. I believe a Taser should be carried if an officer believes the circumstances mean it could and should be used. Great that here at last we have a commissioner who's taking charge, and starting to effect much needed support for the guys in blue. |

| 1198077 | 2011-04-29 03:21:00 | The police might get more guns and more ready access to them. I fear a few innocent people are going to get waxed going on police shooting tactics or lack of them before. | prefect (6291) | ||

I'm not against cops being armed, But they need to be held responsible for their actions. Charges should be laid against them whenever they fire a shot, then they can justify their actions in front of a judge (unless the person they shot was holding a gun). We shouldn't have a system where they have different laws then everyone else. Sure that is always the reality but steps can be taken to minimise it. |

I agree its only fair because the feld polizei always charge any civilian automatically even for self defence when they blast an attacker. They should be held to the same level of culpability or stop charging people waxing crooks in self defence |

| 1198084 | 2011-05-02 09:55:00 | .......I fear a few innocent people are going to get waxed going on police shooting tactics or lack of them before. what makes you think the odds if you being shot by police is worse than the odds being shot by the perp they are after ? at the end of the day you still far more likely to get injured/killed driving than be shot by either. add to metlas comment, they should put police through the wringer just like joe public. if they are going to make joe public spend big $$$ on lawyers to defend a BS charge then it should apply across the board. |
