1198034 2011-04-29 00:29:00 Hi all,

My mother's hearing and eyesight aren't what they used to be - and that's the main problem in finding a suitable alarm clock for her.

DealXtreme, probably the most prolific free-shipping source of clocks, don't really have anything that doesn't emit a high-pitched beep that's pretty useless for her.

And most of those have pokey little LCD screens and tiny buttons fields made for eternal youth.

Anyone here got any suggestions?

Much appreciation!

1198038 2011-04-29 06:49:00 She's doing well at 93!

I'd like to second the suggestion of a radio alarm - even if she hates the content on the radio, it's a lot less harrowing on the nerves to awaken to a voice or music than it is to wake up to a buzzer or a bell.

The one problem however, is clumsy old hands may bump the tuning off - which may result in the tuner not picking up a signal to amplify (ie no alarm at all, other than soft white noise)

1198039 2011-04-29 08:24:00 I also recommend a radio alarm. Being deaf to high pitched sounds means that I do not hear most electronic alarms. Sony put out a couple of models with a large easy to see display. CliveM (6007)

The tuning wheel is on the rear of the unit on the bottom. Not easy to bump by accident.

1198041 2011-04-29 10:35:00 Bloody hell! I was delighted to be able to offer her something (Snorkbox's suggestion) but she didn't want a clock that plugged into the mains but ran on batteries and could be seen from her bed on top of her TV across the room! She didn't tell me beforehand that she'd changed the rules. Typical my mother. I told her I was resigning as her clock researcher and she could go torture someone else. I feel easier already :)

Thanks to all of you for your help!!
