1197813 2011-04-27 23:06:00 Probably the light is hinting that a service is due soon. If no other warnings (oil light on, alternator light on, temperature high, giant clouds of blue or black smoke out the back, or loud noises), just ignore it. It is automotive spam, probably a feature installed by dealers wanting your shekels..
My Suzuki flashes the "Check Engine" light about 10,000km intervals, I always top up the windscreen washer bottle at that time. If you wish to check the engine, it is a mostly metallic knobbly thing festooned with wires and tubes located under the big flap at the front. You don't have to check real hard, it is pretty hard to miss it in there. If you don't see it anywhere, that is a pretty bad sign and you should check further.

Basically, if there are no other warning signs, you can ignore it. If it bothers you, then write :"ENGINE CHECKED" in very neat printing on a Post-It-Note and place it over the idiot light. Get your service done in the holidays just as you planned.

1197815 2011-04-27 23:21:00 Is it the wrench icon? if it is and service not due take it to a garage get them to check fault code and null warning prefect (6291)
1197816 2011-04-27 23:59:00 Timing belts generally due around 80,000 K. 110, 000 K max maybe.

You could try to read engine codes - either by trying to find the diagnostic light on the computer box (sometimes hidden in the front panels around the foot panels, or sides for vans, etc)- but can include a light on the panel (e.g. ignition light). Both would be linked. But need know how to get engine in diagnostic mode with the key/cpu, and how to read the 'flashes" or the codes displayed, in the light(s). The aim is to see if any trouble shooting codes have been stored (e.g. ignition delays, air flow sensor, cam angle sensor, O2, etc).

Sometimes can activate diagnostic mode manually, by bridging a small jumper wire in the code data scanner terminals (which I do for some Nissans), or inserting a fuse in the fuse box. Trouble shooting codes here (bbs.zuwharrie.com) for Suzuki engines. But of course the best way is a scanner/code reader linked to the data connector.

1197817 2011-04-28 00:32:00 Yeah just take it to a garage or auto sparkys and they should be able to check the fault code quick smart. better safe than sorry, although it's probably something silly. wratterus (105)

1197819 2011-04-28 01:45:00 Could even be a fault in the fault circuit... eg: a bad sensor reporting something is wrong when it's not.

As for fault codes, you can get OBD interface devices that read the codes... I saw a circuit in Silicon Chip once, tempted but I think our car (1994) is too old to interface with OBD2 which AFAIK is the first version to be standardised.

I assume the light you refer to is this one? (see attached)
