1197619 2011-04-27 03:32:00 I've got a home produced VHS tape of when I was in a band back in the UK. A "local guy" charges $25 a tape to transfer it to DVD. Is that about the going rate?

Anything in particular I should look out for if I decide to get it done?

1197620 2011-04-27 03:52:00 As long as the "local guy" knows what hes doing there shouldn't be a problem - may pay to ask for any referrals first.

As for the rate - just had a look around, several places charge $30-$40 + so 25 isn't to bad.

You could do it yourself, but it would be cheaper if its a one off to get someone else to do it, you would need cables etc, and possible capture cards.
You can get USB adapters that will do it, but they are more than $25.00

1197621 2011-04-27 03:58:00 Thanks Wainui

I've only got a laptop so I'm stuffed as far as a DIY job is concerned - aren't I?

1197622 2011-04-27 04:34:00 You can get USB devices that has a video in port I think .... and use your builtin mic/line-in for the audio.

You might already have some AV cables lying around .. like off the DVD or Sky box :D or that game console.

Need a large HD thou ..

If so then $25.00 sounds OK to me.

1197624 2011-04-27 07:16:00 $25 is a good price. It's a time consuming process. pine-o-cleen (2955)
1197625 2011-04-28 03:31:00 There is nothing difficult about copying a videotape to DVD. All that's required is a video recorder/player plus a DVD recorder/player and leads to connect the two. Easy peasy.

The only downside is that you need to record it in real time.

I would not pay someone to do what I can do myself.

1197626 2011-04-28 03:51:00 You could get this product (www.ascent.co.nz). At $128 it would be cheaper if you have a few to do. mikebartnz (21)

Mike, what does the USB bit actually do?

It is hardware as well as software. So the USB bit as you call it supplies the connections for your video player to connect.
