| 1198159 | 2011-05-01 08:33:00 | The Queen is fine for the UK as it generates a lot of tourist dollars but down here why??? Would be way better to get rid of all the "Royal " titled crap like golf courses, easter shows etc. We could also save a bundle on not having to fund a governor general.. If you want folks to put their hands up for a NZ republic then I'll be first.. You have not answered the Question! Which Politician do you hold in higher regard than the Queen? That is what a Republic is about - replacing the Queen with a "bloody politician" |

He has certainly just shown how gullible voters and would be leaders of society really are........ perfect man for those who wish a republic. He already sees his feet under the Cabinet table. | Scouse (83) | ||

That is what a Republic is about - replacing the Queen with a "bloody politician" No it isn't. Who said anything about replacing the monarch with a politician - you have just assumed that would be the case. None of the recent home grown Gov Gens (since old Kiwi Keith) have been politicians, and they have done a good job as Head of State in place of the monarch. The most recent have been: The Hon Sir David Stuart Beattie, GCMG, GCVO, QSO, QC 1980 - 1985 The Rt Rev & The Hon Sir Paul Alfred Reeves, GCMG, GCVO, QSO 1985 - 1990 The Hon Dame Catherine Anne Tizard, GCMG, GCVO, DBE, QSO 1990 - 1996 The Rt Hon Sir Michael Hardie Boys, GNZM, GCMG, QSO 1996 - 2001 The Hon Dame Silvia Cartwright PCNZM, DBE, QSO 2001 - 2006 And the present guy, Anand Satyanand seems to be OK, especially because he looks like a NZer, not like that dick Henry. There is no reason why we have to vote for a presidential type of head of state. The politicians have appointed excellent people from non-politician ranks, and that model could be acceptable. |

And my previous question still remains unanswered. Tell me how becoming a republic will benefit New Zealand. You are still making assumptions (which is normal for you). Where is it graven in stone that the State head has to be a President? Where is it stated that there will be a list of people that people can vote for? None of these fundamental questions have been decided. In Oz, when they had their republican debate, it failed because the politicians set up a system whereby they would appoint the head of state, not the people. That was John Howard at his most cynical. He knew that Aussies would never trust the politicians to appoint a head of state so they would throw out the whole thing. And they did. However, it is arguable that our politicians have done a better job with the appointment of heads of state (at least the most recent appointees) than heredity does. That is the problem with a monarchy - you get what nature gives you, and sometimes nature is very unkind. Not many people seem to want Charles for example. A huge number of people in Pongolia want Chas to step aside in favour of his son. Well, if you have a monarchy, you have a monarchy - you don't get to pick and choose... |
