1197168 2011-04-27 07:32:00 Try doing what I didn't have the balls to do at the time - get up and walk out. Noisily. Complaining about "superstitious bullshit", and muttering the words "unprofessional" and "PC crap" and "waste of my time".

Or, if he use the words "I would like to take us in a karakia and waiata" - stand up and say you would prefer that he didn't, as it offends your religious beliefs. And stay standing until he gets on with the meeting.

Or get up and stand just outside the door, and poke your head around the door every minute or so and ask if they're finished yet. Loudly.

If it's a formal meeting, does it have an agenda? Are the singing and prayer listed as agenda items? If not you could possibly object on that basis, but I suspect that would be a one-off and he would ensure it was included on the agenda for the next meeting.

1197169 2011-04-27 08:57:00 There are three Official languages in New Zealand.

English

Maori

and sign language for those that are deaf.

For a Powhiri, you could, perhaps, raise two fingers and leave the audience to interpret what you said. Was it V for victory or maybe something else?

1197170 2011-04-28 03:52:00 Honestly, Id humor them, but for me, Id say everything in English. You do not offend anyone by doing so. If they have an issue, they are the ones making a fuss oover it, so they are the ones in need of a good FU. At work every morning its a karakia etc, I never attend them, I simply just go straight to my office and start work, Im not employed to attend, Im employed for a certain amount of hours and so be it. rob_on_guitar (4196)

1197172 2011-04-30 11:29:00 I have been asked to represent new staff at a Powhiri.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with some of the appropriate phrases in Maori?

Thanks for your help.

Having watched the programme mentioned in Kenj's post above, and not knowing your exact situation, I would say you're walking into an absolute minefield if you take it on. One way or another I thinks the programme was a good excuse for (politely) declining the "opportunity" they've (apparently, lightly) offered you!
