I'm not against cops being armed, But they need to be held responsible for their actions.

Charges should be laid against them whenever they fire a shot, then they can justify their actions in front of a judge (unless the person they shot was holding a gun). We shouldn't have a system where they have different laws then everyone else. Sure that is always the reality but steps can be taken to minimise it.

1198087 2011-05-02 19:09:00 I agree its only fair because the feld polizei always charge any civilian automatically even for self defence when they blast an attacker.
They should be held to the same level of culpability or stop charging people waxing crooks in self defence

Self defence is a legal defence in New Zealand however it has several prerequisites to be considered self defence. One for example is that you can't shoot someone in the back who is retreating from you, as the conditions that meant you could defend yourself ended when the crim turns and runs. Of course this law won't be popular with you all, I'm sure many of the sensible sentencing types feel a shot in the back is fair game.
