Hope he's got a brick enclosure set up for the liquid metal, nothing like red hot steel burning through your floorboards...

If he's going to those measures, makes me think he might be hiding a bit more than some songs and videos...

This isn't the states, the potential fine isn't dependent on the amount of infringements, it maxes out as $15,000 IIRC. And that's only after three warnings.

1197208 2011-04-26 06:08:00 A few hard drives and a bit of Thermite is probably a lot cheaper than $15,000 though.

I still reckon the fine should only be the same as the RRP of the pirated material.

1197210 2011-04-26 08:04:00 Load Vista on the dodgy drive.
A. Let's see 'em make sense of that.
B. What punishment can they inflict that is worse than Vista?
;)

I have this friend and he freely admits to torrenting a LOT of stuff.

He has come up with a rather unique method of protecting his interests in the event of the serving of a warrent under the new Copyright law.

2kg's of Thermite on his External HDD stack.

After a using 1kg and discovering when it accidently went off that only one HDD melted he increased it to two.

Future Darwin Award winner I think.

Tell him to setup a video camera and film it if he ever sets it off. Hopefully the cops don't find the camera.

1197214 2011-04-26 09:21:00 One group I knew (from some overseas security firm) had a small charge embedded above the platters of the HDD. If and intrusion was detected or the device was triggered manually the charge detonated, punching several steel pins through the platters. When the pins contacted the other side of the drive it apparently became electromagnetic, thus wiping the drive... en theory.

Idk if it actually worked but some guy told me about the time he was using his laptop and accidentally set of the charge. Boy did he get a fright! (and a telling off)

Prevention from detection is better than a solution after detection.

Not doing it at all is even safer. Don't even need a digital condom

Get him to set the camera back a fair bit, otherwise his camera may be a bit flasher than he thought.
