1197110 2011-04-25 21:07:00 I am happy with my plan. Same as Somebody's. 120MB for $12 with Telecom.

I have all my addresses on a excel reader, use maps for directions, read news when waiting, got a fart program to make grandaughter laugh, Sydney transport timetables for when visiting daughter...I put a $30 Vodafone sim card in over there!!! I believe I can do a topup next time I go.

Never use the phone for roaming!!! Costs a bomb I am told. They are not locked so a Vodaphone sim is just great

Great machines for one who hated cellphones before I bought this one before last Xmas.

1197111 2011-04-25 21:21:00 I use my iPhone on a Vodafone $60 smartphone plan where I get 600txts, 60 minutes, 1000pxts and 3GB of data, I usually only use about 500mb of data though. lagbort (5041)
1197112 2011-04-25 21:43:00 I use an iPhone on 2Degrees pre-pay. I pay $20 a month for 1 GB of data. This gets me no minutes, but does include 100 txts.

With that 1 Gb of data I make calls (viber/skype/fring), send SMS messages (msn/twitter/whatsapp/viber) and use about 700mb a month of data.

Sounds pretty cheap to me!! :D

1197113 2011-04-25 22:06:00 Get your Son on the $10 a month for 100 MB . Otherwise it's usually $1 per day on the days you use it (up to 10mb a day) .

They're surprisingly cheap when you add it up vs a gps, browsing on the go makes life easier a lot of the time for me, as well as the added benefit of email coming instantly to my phone

:pf1mobmini:

x2 I'm on a $10 100 MB plan, and 20 mins peak time 60 off peak works for me because most of my peak time calls are to 0800 numbers . Texting is not an issue because most of my peer group is too thick or lazy to use it much .

Apps? I use my GPS frequently, but I use the in-built Garmin so there's no data charge there . What really works for me is that I can use Word and Excel on the run, and my synchronized Outlook runs my life spot on . All for about $34 a month Vodafone on account, including as Chill says, emails received immediately .

I'd say most teens wouldn't need half these bells and whistles, so it'd be worth your while nailing down what exactly your son does need, and select the phone and charges around that .

1197114 2011-04-26 00:28:00 I don't have a way to calc the costs so I don't use the data on the phone .
I use wifi when at uni or home in the lounge or in the hotel which gives free wifi . Smaller than dragging a laptop . I only take a ultraportable when I have work to do . . but not leisure . I cannot type on a Netbook so that's out for me .

For the phone, I use the GPS, Nokia is best if you want a purely offline map and it contains all the many POIs . . . hotels, restaurants, subway stations etc . . no no turn by turn unless you pay a few bucks a month or $30 for a year .

So I use GPS, basic games like Tetris on my budget airline without flight entertainment, basic web and email, FB, Skyping back home . . . . .

If it was NZ travel, I guess eventually I would just get a 3G USB stick and just pay . . . . . 512MB or 2GB etc .

$30NZ per MB in many countries .

OTOH if you get prepay in places like Singapore it might feel cheap but not really if you are on prepay . It still cost maybe $1SG per 10MB or so . . . . unless you went to a low cost cellular carrier like Starhub .

1197116 2011-04-26 01:31:00 If your Son has an Android, it's easy to get something like 3G Watchdog which will keep track of his daily / weekly / monthly data use, as well as another App that works in tandem with it like a firewall to block data either all the time, or once he reaches a certain "limit".

It's dead easy to setup and use too!

Otherwise, it's not difficult for him to use (Again something like an Android) and just have the 3G Data disabled semi-permanently and only use WiFi. If you have an iPhone or the likes then you've gotta "fool" your phone by having the wrong APN data in there I believe. I've not had an iPhone for over a year, so things may have changed in the new iOS versions.

1197117 2011-04-26 01:45:00 You can disable data on an iphone, I didn't think that was a new thing. You can also use the dataman app to monitor your data. Alex B (15479)
1197118 2011-04-26 02:00:00 Certainly any monitoring apps is, coz previously you weren't able to have multiple applications running ;) Chilling_Silence (9)
1197119 2011-04-26 02:04:00 Well if we are talking about iOS3 we might as well talk about the limitations of Android 1.5 at the same time :P Alex B (15479)
