| 1198282 | 2011-04-29 02:56:00 | I am not an avid watcher of sports but I am vaguely interested. I would like to be able to identify which teams come from where but the names of the teams conjure up some sort of secret society. The teams are almost always identified by a name such as the Mystics or the Highlanders. There is no clue in the name of the team and it seems that if you want to know what town they represent or what sport they play, you need to be up with the play there is no room for the casual observer. There was, recently, a very important basketball match or at least it seemed to be very important but I have no idea who was playing who as they only named the teams by their, seemingly, secretive names. It is a name and home town known only to the initiated. What I wonder is, if you are passionately interested in sport, wouldnt you like to see other people at least take an interest? Why would you not call them the Auckland Mystics or the Wellington Highlanders? If they were identified in that way I would then know which team came from where and I would know who to cheer for. I have always had a passing interest in rugby union, but because the teams are no longer identified by the town they represent, I have no idea what team represents Auckland or Wellington or anywhere. Because of this, my passing interest is waning as I have no idea who to cheer for. Is there a list of names somewhere that I could consult, or are the names going to remain part of a seemingly secret society known only to sports aficionados? |

I think it's bloody damn stupid that we have moronic team names like Black Socks, White Socks, Black Sticks... Really? What the hell is all of it about?? Does every NATIONAL team need a nickname that has the words BLACK or WHITE in them? |

Is there a list somewhere? A website perhaps? What if I lived in Kaitaia or Blenheim, for example? How would I know who to cheer for? |
