| 1197424 | 2011-04-26 23:26:00 | No power here ysterday from 2.30 pm till 9.30 pm yesterday. We had cold chicken, cheese sarnies and wine for tea by candlelight. Put extra clothes on for warmth and sat around telling jokes and thinking about what it must have been like in the very old days. No computers, TV, or PS3 of course!:crying LL |

Before we had television and computers, etc, we had the radio as our evening entertainment. There were quite a few radio programmes that we listened to regularly. My favourite was "Life With Dexter," a comedy show. There were daily soap operas for the housewives. It was much of what television is today, without pictures. And if there was nothing much on the radio you would play board games or cards - or even go to bed early.:wub |

Yes, in the not so long ago days of the 40s and 50s we had radio and played cards and games etc . But there were power cuts then too and we didn't miss what we didn't have . LL |

LL In the 1950s there used to be power cuts most Sunday afternoons so they could conserve the water in the lakes . That would never be tolerated these days . If you were fortunate enough to have a battery radio you could still have your entertainment, but I'm not certain if many people had battery radios . Not in the city I would suppose, but out in the country where there was no power they would have been popular . Does anyone here remember battery radios? They were valve radios and had two batteries - one long and slim and had about six connections for different voltages, I think we used 9v, and a large cylindrical 1 . 5v battery . The latter was known as a telephone battery because it was commonly used as a speech battery in the manual telephones . How well do you remember? |
