1197036 2011-04-25 21:54:00 Compared to the estimated $500 million deficit (www.nzherald.co.nz) for the bloody Rugby debacle!
It's interesting to compare it to an "original estimate (en.wikipedia.org)" here.

Also, "Excluded from the survey total is KiwiRail's planned $1.1 billion investment in rail and ferries needed to carry spectators around the country.

This was considered to have benefits too broad to count as a World Cup expense." :angry:angry

The government borrowed a billion last week, and have borrowed 12 billion so far this year, so 36 million is a drop in the ocean litrally, when they can easily borrow more. Worry about paying it back in the future, just hope all our younger tax payers haven't left the country by then :)

To get a reality grip nearly every country in the OECD including Australia is running large government deficits in the last few years, the UK will be worse than NZ even with the CHCH Earthquake (% of GDP) AND they have had large Austerity measures.

Luckily the NZ government sovereign debt is at the lower end on the OECD (% of GDP). Does make me wonder why on earth we didn't borrow money for "long term" gain infrastructure projects while the government was running decent surpluses prior to the last few years. A few billion for FTTD or the holiday Highway, or new dams doesn't seem that bad now.

Oh. That's OK then. Everyone else is doing it.

hey I know someone who added another $6000 to their personal debt, guess I might do the same.

Governments go through years of Surplus and deficits, its best not to get hysterical every time there is a down slope.

Exactly. Don't the government have to be in surplus after each year anyway? After what went down in the 80's?

1197043 2011-04-26 05:52:00 But where does all the "extra" money that these big "investments" in mega sporting events are supposed to bring to the country actually end up? What percentage of the population see any "benefit"?. It seems to me that if you've got the odd spare billion knocking around to gamble on men with funny shaped balls running round a patch of grass, there are more creative ways of using it to generate future wealth and long employment (cycle ways and a sudden temporary need for extra security personnel not withstanding!) . tuiruru (12277)

1197045 2011-04-26 09:31:00 I assume that part of that $500,000,000 will cover the fees for someone to watch it for me?
I hope so, or the whole thing will have been in vain from my narrow viewpoint, but if someone is getting to look at it on my behalf, it must be ok. (Just as long as it doesn't imperil the National Cycleways, thereby throwing the country into chaos.)
