1226602 2011-08-28 04:31:00 Who is the local Importer ... of Western Digital External hard drives?

My daughter bought one from Dastardly Dick, the pirates friend. The power supply has frayed at the end, near where it goes into the power point leaving exposed wiring (very dangerous)The wife took it to a Dastardly Dick store and was told that my daughter must have wound it around itself several times and caused the damage herself and therefore NOT covered by any warranty. This is not the case,my daughter is most particular with her computer gear.

The overall impression my wife got from Dastardly was that 'Go away,I can't be bothered'

So I need to find out who to contact in New Zealand.I went on line and filled out an RMA,which they want me to sent to bloody Singapore...if I chose to do this it will probably cost as much as buying another power supply.

I will be taking this further as I can not abide, sloppy, shoddy service.Suggestions would be appreciated.

The hard drive is 18 months old and used once a month on her MAC

1226603 2011-08-28 04:42:00 Have you tried Calling them ? Contact Details (support.wdc.com) NZ is about 3/4 way down the page -- call and ask who is the local support crowd.

Several of my suppliers sell WD, Synnex being one,but they are the Distributors , not the actual importers (I think) Under their warranty for WD they state :

Synnex to provide a replacement unit (End user service line: 0508 555 639, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm) < That number is WD support, so at least if you talk to someone they can hopefully answer any questions.

1226605 2011-08-28 20:33:00 They have been very good to me with power supplys, they replaced mine pretty much no questions asked. (the changeable plug head and the adapter body did not fit together well so it would loose power randomly) The Error Guy (14052)
1226606 2011-08-28 22:07:00 On the other hand, it would be a cheap and simple job to chop off the existing plug and wire in another one, and would cost less than the courier charge to return the thing.

Unless we're talking about a plug and power supply combined. If that's the case, it's a low voltage output and not too risky. Some heat shrink or electircal tape may suffice.

That would more than likely be the case.

1226608 2011-08-28 23:16:00 It's hard to imagine wires that fray themselves, even with a manufacturing defect that seems unlikely so I'd have been sceptical if I worked in the store also. If it looks like physical damage you'll have a hard time proving otherwise for a warranty claim. Unless the insulation is defective or the device poorly designed it should not normally happen

Warranties generally cover manufacturing defects and exclude wear and tear. Any competent sparky or appliance repair person could probably make it safe in 5 mins.

Not saying it's anything your daughter has done, just that it may be impossible to prove otherwise.

1226609 2011-08-29 02:06:00 The guy at Dastardly Dick said that he had,had others do it,then quickly shut up... ruup (1827)
1226610 2011-08-29 03:58:00 Thanks wainuitech, I have managed to talk to a WD representative and they are sending a replacement free of charge. The guy I was speaking to said that there had been others replaced and he could not understand why the seller had not gone into bat for us.Anyway we will be back up and running in a couple of weeks,I suspect that it will happen again as the unit appears IMHO to be poorly designed. ruup (1827)
1226611 2011-08-29 04:05:00 Awhhhhhhhh that breakage -- Good you got it sorted.

I have dealt with a few like that, the Strain Relief Boot, is actually to stiff, and doesn't flex like its meant to.

The cable is meant to move about with day to day usage, and the boot is meant to support where its flexing over a larger area, BUT since the boot is not flexible enough, it actually creates a solid point so the cable breaks just outside the boot. = Bad design.
