1226081 2011-08-25 08:09:00 Looking at buying new printer I thought I might try wireless but not sure if my computer will take one. Have looked at specs but none the wiser

HP Pavilion Media Center TV m8170a Desktop PC

If It can is there any disadvantage with wireless:stare:

1226082 2011-08-25 08:16:00 Its not so much the PC, its the router.

As long as the Printer is wireless, and the router has wireless, and the PC is connected to the router it usually works.

Then theres Bluetooth As described here (www.ehow.com)

Bluetooth doesn't have the same range as true wireless.
Disadvantages: Wireless /Bluetooth will sometimes take longer to print out a print job, esp if its further away.

1226083 2011-08-25 08:16:00 Dont think its got wireless (h10025.www1.hp.com)

But it does have a wireless mouse and keyboard, theyre not the same thing

All you need is a wireless PCI or wireless USB adapter. Then install the drivers, then configure it

1226084 2011-08-25 09:05:00 Thanks um (okay you can now all laugh but..)
The router wheres that in regard to my PC its not the modem is it??

Yes its got the wireless mouse and keyboard and a few spare USB sockets
Whats a wireless PCI or wireless USB adapter? As in what do they look like.
Ive progressed to a flash pen thingey that goes in a USB socket
What the adapter look like

i thought I could put the printer in another room or further away than current cord allows

1226085 2011-08-25 09:15:00 This is a USB wireless adapter (dicksmith.co.nz bmForm%2CbmEditable%2CbmPrevTemplate%2CbmText&bmHash=9f41f90722d64efbbdd95ea945bfe43ccfc9456b)

This is what a wireless PCI adapter looks like. (www.edencomputers.co.nz) You have to open the case, to install this. And you need a spare PCI slot on the motherboard

A USB flash drive isnt a wireless USB adapter. Even tho both plug into a USB port

1226086 2011-08-25 10:34:00 Thanks speedy, had a look but wouldnt that mean my broadband connection would be wireless. So to sum up comp has to be wireless connection to broadband either with a wireless router or USB wireless adapter, then i can have a wireless printer.
If I dont have wireless connection to BB I cant buy the wireless printer?

1226087 2011-08-25 10:48:00 No your broadband doesn't have to be wireless. To use wireless in a house. They're 2 totally different things. All you need is, a printer / and router that support wireless, and a wireless adapter on whatever computer. The wireless modem (if you use more than 1 computer) will get the other computer on the internet (using the wireless), if you install a USB wireless adapter on it. And configure it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1226088 2011-08-25 11:14:00 As I suggested previously, as long as the modem/Router is wireless, and the PC is connected to the router it will work.

The wireless printer is only a basic node (device) on the network. It would have its own IP address which would have to be set Via the printers control panel to match the routers IP range, and the PC can print fine.
You don't need a a wireless adapter on the PC as long as its connected to the router Via a Ethernet cable.
The printer can be put anywhere as long as its within range of the wireless router.

The only time you would need an adaptor is if you only had a modem and not a modem/router. The USB adapters are no where as reliable as a router which is far easier to setup and maintain.

See attachment for a simple diagram.

1226089 2011-08-25 11:37:00 Shall have to think about this overnight. Think.. I understand
wainuitech pics helps. So my router D-link DSL 502T is not wireless, its got no little aerial and specs say wired so presume its not wireless capable.

If a printer is sold as wireless is it likely that it can also be used unwireless, cord comp to printer.

And so to bed wil check this tommorrow

1226090 2011-08-25 21:36:00 Most wireless printers I have looked at also have USB as well and I would think they all do gary67 (56)
