1199158 2011-05-03 12:23:00 I'm guessing the retailers idea of 'cost' is the GST inclusive figure. They add the 10% and sell it, pocketting the 10% as well as the 15% GST that they claim back later.
Cost will probably include the GST they had to pay when acquiring the product.
They can only claim that portion of the GST and not the full 15% on the sold price.

I have a Hoover, with Dial controls. What do you think, it's pretty old now.

1199160 2011-05-03 20:46:00 It's an F+P smartdrive 9 excellence 5.5. That mean anything to you?

Fixed a F&P a couple of times using this website

applianceguru.com

Have got a couple of parts on TM for a hell of alot less than taking somewhere to get fixed

Can be a ***** tracking down the offending bit though

1199161 2011-05-04 07:21:00 Kept my machine in the UK going for years thanks to a Haynes repair manual (and a friendly repair shop for parts).
I'm told that toploaders put less wear on the main bearings.

Thanks, will try this.

But...if it can't / is to expensive to repair, what is the general consensus on good brands? Or brands to stay away from?

Good link squire thanks

Looking at the forum you would be mad to own a Maytag washing machine. Flicked thru a few pages didnt see any 380 or 400s problems.
Maybe explains why my 40 year old one still going like new.
Its outlasted the F&P Gentle Annies and later Smart drives, I have a 380 in the house and a 400 in the shed both no problems for last 20 years.

1199164 2011-05-04 10:33:00 We've had a Whirlpool front loader for about 10 years. It's never given us any problem & washes cleaner than the top loaders.
We've had top loaders. The old ones were good & lasted. The newer one's are rubbish. Our last 2 (F&P) lasted just long enough to be out of warranty

1199166 2011-05-04 20:41:00 As I've been doing the Laundry in my house forever - and the machines last longer that way, because nobody else will stuff it up - I'm also a big fan of the top loaders (I had a front loader or two in my young days). My F&P Smartdrive has been going now for well over 12 years, with no end in sight. Love it.

lol, That's why, unless it's a laptop, you build them yourself.
We've got washing machines, unlike Indians etc that have to fight the crocs off at the local river
