1199721 2011-05-07 23:41:00 It's really hot here in Philippines (Manila), although a tropical depression is due tonight. Photo taking in KL (Malaysia) might still be a bit dark at 6am. Plenty of food outlets around Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur.

Yeah .. I read and before I assumed that Asia is bright but can be dark early mornings before people get to work ....

I could do shoots over the water/boats and temples for sihouettes - hoping for some colour in the skies with the pollution :p

Sunset for city photo's then ... :)

1199723 2011-05-07 23:47:00 I remember doing physical training in Singapore at about 0630 before the day started to warm up. It was daylight then but no sun.

Check this site (www.timeanddate.com) and here (www.timeanddate.com).

1199724 2011-05-09 06:02:00 Just got a reply from a friend in SG:

"Sunrise is now at around 7am. Using "low light camera" is possible w/o flashlight."

1199727 2011-05-22 05:27:00 I don't like Thailand. I stayed near the Shangrila hotel and thought that was going to be pretty safe but it's dirty everywhere and that you need to walk past to the train station or to the boat pier. The water clearly show it is polluted (it's all brown with leaves and rubbish floating on the water). Near the Shangrila Hotel this guy ran over the street to me with a colour brochure of girls and started yelling out repeatedly even after I walked off - YOU WANT GIRLS YOU COME TO ME!! YOU WANT GIRLS YOU COME TO ME!! I didn't even go to Silom at night ..... to avoid it all.

Then the morning I went to the Grand Palace and got scammed. A polite nice man dressed up in suit with shirt/tie with a Thai flag pin on his jacket said to me the Grand Palace was closed and then suggested me to see the Big Buddha and the Lucky Buddha then they took me to a Indian tailor store and tried to get me to buy a suit or and shirts and then to a gem showroom (Export Centre) and then to the factory and finaly to a souvenir store when 2 staff members directed me to the back of the shop where the back wall just opened up after unlocking it under the counter, me and the 2 worked upstairs and they had quality fake Omegas Rolexes .......

I don't know why people go to Thailand. Maybe for the beaches but I don't find Bangkok that grand. 3 so so temples and then you have Jim Thompson and a few others etc... and that's it. I find if you eat and shop at the markets/streets/hawker centres it is cheap, esp - counterfeit clothing/hangbags/DVDs etc and maybe some of the stuff are a bit cheaper than Kuala Lumpur like local decent eating places, decent motels and taxi's. However, the BTS (skytrain) and the MRT (subway) are on par with Malaysia and some even on par with Singapore. All the other stuff like orignal authentic designer goods, all kinds of foods in department store foodcourts are just as pricey as anywhere in the world. International Hotels are just the same as Malaysia but not as much as SG.

I did research before I went to Bangkok and knew the types of tricks they pull. Some even wear official Tourist Police T-shirts and try to tell you the palace/temple is closed and offer to organise transport for you to see another temple ... Many tourists get "kidnapped" by the Tuk Tuk drivers who take them to a tailor or gem shop instead of your destination.

Unless you book a private tour, then all tour guides will take you to a gem store during or at the end of the tour. I politely refused to go in the shop and just waited outside for the transfer vehicle back to my hotel. The next day I got the same tour guide and this time she didn't even try to take us to the gem store as she knew we weren't going to go in.

It is pretty hard to avoid this sort of stuff, so it was best to keep an open mind and realise this is going to happen and it is how many make money to survive.

Did you get the dusk/dawn photos you wanted?

1199729 2011-05-22 06:24:00 I got some shots at dusk in Singapore. Didn't do dawn as there were plenty of light already before/at sunrise. I wanted a darkish yellow red sunrise.

While in BKK; I spent too much time with the stupid tuk tuk so couldn't get back to the hotel and get my tripod and come out again so did a handheld shot of the Wat Arun while on the boat (and I just wanted to get home, sleep and get to the airport ..).

I was only in BKK for 2 days, reached there at 4pm so really just 1.5 days. The first night caught up with old school friends. I left the morning at 3am via taxi which the hotel organised so I could checkin at 5am for my 7am flight.

I might visit Phuket for the beaches, being in Wellington I find South Island and Auckland summers challenging :D and I am not a beach person but they look great for photography. So maybe that. I dislike the humidity.

But ... BKK is just not for me. It's certainly not on my list of travels at anytime. You cannot escape it. You may stay at Shangri-la and you see that stuff every day as you go out...

Jen did you purchase a tour or something while in BKK? And, was that transfer vehicle to the hotel organised via your own hotel?

1199730 2011-05-22 06:42:00 Phuket is great even if you are not a beach person. I spent a week there a few years back (6 weeks prior to the Boxing Day Tsunami actually). You can do trips out to the islands and snorkel or just admire the gorgeous scenery.

Chiang Mai is really nice. Much more laid back and relaxing than Bangkok. I would recommend visiting that area and also touring around the far northern borders and mountains. It is only an hour North by air from Bangkok.

I organised my own tours in Bangkok at a small tourist agent down from my hotel. Much cheaper than using the tourist desk at the hotel. Pick-up and drop-off was part of the deal. I only did the Grand Palace and the floating market.
