| 1199107 | 2011-05-03 20:18:00 | I had the 'fortune' to work alongside a major tomato processing plant (one of the ones mentioned in the quote I posted) and what I saw would turn you off catsup or tomato products in general for two lifetimes . In the tomato fields, the best crop is hand-picked and placed gently into almost velvet lined boxes and sent to high-ended stores and markets . The next picking took the lower grade tomatoes to restaurants and for home-cooks and other discriminating consumers . The next picking was by machines that grabbed anything that was firm enough to coarsely appear tomato like - including on the vine rotten tomatoes, dead baby birds still in their nests (ever seen inside a bird's nest? Yuck!) - field mice and possibly some of their offspring, green snakes, seagull poop, dirt and tomato worms, grasshoppers and other insects . This 'product' was trucked to the plant (that I worked next to) in huge non-leaking fiberglass tubs where it was then pumped into a conveyor belt that carried the rotten slime to a cooker where it was pressure cooked into a green slurry . Notice I said: 'green'? To get it to a nice red color, it was food-dyed . |
