| 1228106 | 2011-09-01 09:26:00 | Hi guys, did a quick search on the site and had no luck, so hence the new thread. I keep my itunes music on an external and now want to use the drive on my new mac. No matter who I ask they say just plug it in an away you go. Wrong ! Its a very large collection ( thanks Real Groovy ) all the albums have been ripped with iTunes, have album art and all track listings. I'm sure that there is a file on my old Mac that needs to be copied over that will transfer all the library data so that I don't have to open each album separately. It has crossed my mind to use migration assistant but I only want to move one file. At the moment my iTunes app has been set to store music on the external, but it doesn't see the music that is already on there. If you understand my problem and can help, then please accept my thanks in advance. |

I don't need to import the music, I just need to point iTunes at it without having to re-document all the playlists, play counts etc. Whilst waiting for a reply it struck me how to word my google search and this is what I found. Location of the iTunes library files: Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library.xml Windows XP \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.xml Windows Vista \Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl \Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.xml Windows 7 \Users\username\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl \Users\username\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.xml I just copied the files and replaced the current ones with those. Itunes instantly "saw" my music and I have all my playlists, podcasts, ratings and play counts back but on my new comp'. Hope this helps anyone else with this problem. |
