1200682 2011-05-08 23:57:00 Preliminary work on a $200 million port south of Blenheim to replace the Picton ferry terminal could begin within months, with the Government set to announce a high-level study today.

Shifting the ferry terminal to Clifford Bay would give Picton ''the potential to develop itself as a real destination'', Transport Minister Steven Joyce says.

If you look at the map Clifford Bay is a more direct route from Wellington. For the ferry to travel to Picton as it does at present it has to travel North part of the way to get into the Marlborough Sounds. A more roundabout route.

See here (www.stuff.co.nz).

1200683 2011-05-09 00:05:00 Saw that earlier, think it is 100% positive for everyone except Picton.

Steven Joyce reckons Picton will be able to make it's name as a destination, rather than somewhere you have to wait on your trip.... TBH I can't see that at all - Waikawa Bay is all holiday homes, they will be fine, but a massive amount of customers to the cafes etc in Picton have got to be travelers.

I reckon it will kill Picton unless they upgrade the port to take larger cruise ships, but it's still a great idea. They might even bring back a fast ferry if we're lucky!

The trip will be slightly longer from Nelson, maybe an extra 30KM or so? The Dashwood pass is a fun drive anyway. :p

1200684 2011-05-09 00:07:00 Think when this was looked at last time, the major advantage was Rail as some of the inclines from Picton to south of Clifford Bay dictated the Tonnage and Engine requirements that could be used

Picton may not be to happy but it will be a destination in its own right
The only downside would be the scenery that would be missed wending your way through the Sounds on the Ferries

1200685 2011-05-09 00:24:00 With cheap flights these days, we tend to avoid the ferry. Cicero (40)
1200686 2011-05-09 03:00:00 Picton people can't have it both ways.
They like the business from ferry passengers, but they complain about the wash from the ferries causing erosion on their beaches.
Well, that problem will disappear completely when the ferries go to Clifford Bay.

Take to ferries to Clifford Bay and leave Queen Charlotte Sound/Tory Channel as recreation areas.

Too true squire, they had better shut the **** up about the wash of the ferrys.
Also the ferries should preempt the Pictoners by asking for a higher transit speed thru tory channel and queen charlotte sound.

1200689 2011-05-09 05:35:00 The powers that be have been talking about this for many decades.

I used to live about twenty kilometres south of Clifford Bay in the 50s (a wee town called Ward) and they were talking about it then.

I'll believe it when they start work on the new terminal. I don't think that the people in Picton have too much to worry about.

.

What does that mean? It was a destination.
Only thing that saved it really - apart from ferry passengers the place is dead. Pretty. But dead.

Probably kill it altogether now.

1200691 2011-05-09 07:32:00 Yeah, the trip through the Sounds is definitely a highlight of the trip. Without that there may be very little tourist value to the boat trip. However, a faster transit may have many other advantages.

Many in Picton will struggle.
