1200098 2011-05-07 06:00:00 No - it won't be ticking .

Got a couple of questions though .

I'm sending it by US Mail and it is a guitar effects pedal - specifically for a bass guitar .

It is valued at $139 . 00 USD which at the moment is equal to $176 . 11 NZD .

IF I use the item first and send it as a used device verses a new device untouched by human hands (mine) - is there a difference in the GST?

At what value is the GST figured - at MY US price or the value of the same item in NZ?

If I send it as a gift - does that change the GST?

This page from youse guys NZ-Import site I Googled is kinda confusing:::

1200099 2011-05-07 06:15:00 Mark it as a gift, then there is no GST payable. pine-o-cleen (2955)
1200100 2011-05-07 06:21:00 From my understanding (only my opinion) if you send it as a gift, there shouldn't be any tax to pay because:

Gifts with a declared value that is higher than $NZ110 attract Customs charges on the value in excess of $NZ110 .

and then:
Customs does not make any charge where the revenue payable on any one importation is less than $60 .

So ~$176-$110= $66 (taxable amount)

The tax on $66 is under the $60 cut off .

1200102 2011-05-07 07:27:00 If you don't mark it as a gift, I believe you need to send something worth at least ~$300 NZD before they try to collect the tax.

Of course you could just do what the dodgy eBay sellers from China do and mark everything as "Gift worth $10"

1200103 2011-05-07 07:42:00 You should declare the goods and list it's value (in US$).
Gift means nothing to customs other than someone is trying to put one over on them.

from Stuff.co.nz
"Currently, goods imported from overseas costing $399 or less are exempt from the value added tax, a rule set up because it was deemed to be uneconomic for the Government to try to collect the tax below that level. GST does apply on some goods costing less than $399, including clothes, shoes and beauty products"

1200104 2011-05-07 07:57:00 at your value - no problem. just declare as normally. GST does not hit until ~$300NZ (incl postal cost). it used to be GST of min $50NZ then it is payable but with GST risen to 15% that threshold has increased.

eg. $450NZ cellphone + $50NZ postal - currency already converted. 15% of $500NZ is $75NZ. Assuming the rule is still $50NZ. It is somewhat bit higher now ... dunno what it is exactly. $75 is higher than $50 therefore you pay all of $75.

althou, fyi, the threshold some yrs ago used to be $100NZ.

the issue with gifts, i am unsure about the specific numbers. but when i asked customs nz on the telephone, they said if you had a expensive laptop or jewellery or whatever with a birthday card inside - it will still be up for tax calculations.......

that won't work, unless the person sending it also purposely undervalue it (common with ebay sellers) and it doesn't get picked up by customs.

C'mon, Joe. You'll be lucky to find anyone at your local Post Office who've even heard of NZ. Send it as a gift, and at the $ value mentioned, you should not have any problems. :D

Jen has it sussed in post #3.

Yeah - I need to insure it so I'll declare the value - 'was just wondering if I should 'use' it first, that's all - as a way to pre-test it .

The postmaster's wife is from Dubbo, Australia . I think she was a war bride from 1998 .
