1228041 2011-09-01 05:59:00 Hey there I currently have a cheap little HP Pavilion DV1000 (old I know) and would like to either custom build or buy a cheap gaming system that costs in around the $800 range, It isn't for any of the newer games that rely on a really powerful system but is more for running games with specs like Left 4 Dead, if anyone could recommend a system to look at or somewhere that I could get cheap parts would be awesome.

Thanks in advance :)

Well, if you reused the case, reused optical drives, hard drives and just change MB, CPU, RAM, PSU and most important of all GPU, you might get away with it.

1228043 2011-09-01 09:37:00 haha yeah it's just a rough estimate I could pay more but as I am only 16 thats alot of money to save :D, the case, and drives are no biggie I can get them for free it's more the CPU, PSU, MB and the GPU that I need help with finding xXjaspaXx (16525)
1228044 2011-09-01 09:45:00 I need a Graphics card that is Pixel Shader and Vertex Shader compatible and roughly a CPU that can put out at least 2.00Ghz or 3.00Ghz processing speed, I already know how much RAM I want and where I can get it the trouble is finding a compatible motherboard, if you could recommend anything that would be great xXjaspaXx (16525)
1228045 2011-09-01 10:03:00 the other option is that I buy better, more expensive parts seperatly and slowly build the PC up from the MB but as I said I need help with finding compatible parts as I only have a small amount of knowledge when it comes to this, putting the PC together is easy it's just compatibility that I struggle with, thanks for any help you can give me :) xXjaspaXx (16525)
1228046 2011-09-01 11:58:00 I think it would be pretty much impossible to find a discreet video card that doesn't have pixel and vertex shaders these days.

If you are keen to put something together your self have a look at pricespy.co.nz

So go off the parts listed in that quote then. It's a good GPU and thats the most important part of a gaming PC.

MB, CPU and RAM generally have to be done all at once.

1228048 2011-09-01 21:43:00 tough to do for $800
www.computerlounge.co.nz $135
www.computerlounge.co.nz $169
www.computerlounge.co.nz $109
www.computerlounge.co.nz $209

Just over $600, you should probably add a PSU and maybe windows depending what you have.
www.computerlounge.co.nz $148 I'd consider this the starting point for a gaming psu
makes it $750 with no OS
www.computerlounge.co.nz $179
makes it over $900 including OS

Normally I would reccomend a sandy bridge i5 and an nVidia graphics card for gaming ( 560ti for example) but the parts I listed will play pretty much everything as long as you don't expect high ress or full eye candy and given your budget may be as good as you can manage.

If you dont need windows or a psu spend the extra on the graphics card.

1228049 2011-09-01 21:45:00 If you are on a limited budget, have you concidered a used gaming system, perhaps on trademe. Driftwood (5551)
1228050 2011-09-01 23:45:00 I decided to try again on Paradigms website as they have some cheaper options than computer lounge, this is a cut and past of a shopping cart from them (www.pp.co.nz (http://www.pp.co.nz)). I didn't quite hit $800 but it's close.
There are a few compromises, but it should be a reasonable machine for the price.
I just enjoy figuring this stuff out, don't have anything to do with any of these companies :)
