1229676 2011-09-08 07:12:00 Setting up an old PC as a media centre for home theatre.
Using up spare parts.
Adding a Genius Sound Maker 5.1 card to improve the sound.
Also have a Asus SPDIF out module.
I asume that will have to connect to the auxillary on the sound card but the pin outs are different.
The SPDIF has power, blank, signal, ground while the sound card has left, ground, ground, right.

1229677 2011-09-08 07:15:00 It sounds like the sound card connector is analogue as it has left & right. It may be for the old analogue connection from the optical drive. CYaBro (73)

1229681 2011-09-08 08:02:00 It may use something similar to what I have here (for another soundcard). But its got all connections on it (SPDIF optical and analog). I think its got 6-7 connections or something tho Speedy Gonzales (78)
1229682 2011-09-08 09:15:00 No expert, but I thought SPDIF was for HD video sound from DVDs and probably for connecting to the on board sound on your motherboard. The card you linked to would not support this. PPp (9511)
1229683 2011-09-08 09:25:00 It can be connected to a header, so you get optical and RCA on the back of the case. Helpful, if you have a stereo or something with optical on it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1229684 2011-09-08 09:43:00 Yeh I want the optical to connect to the suround sound. Driftwood (5551)
1229685 2011-10-14 15:04:00 if your motherboard has built in sound check to see if it has an spdif header for your module to connect to. if not check on the sound card for an spdif header if that does not have one then you will need to buy a sound card that has. you can pick up a cheap sound card that has spdif capabilities. I bought a TRUST sound card from maplins for about £15 a while ago which had it's own spdif module. Ebuyer is probably the best place to find a cheap sound card that will do the job. jayscsi (16538)
