| 1201677 | 2011-05-12 04:57:00 | All in this afternoons Herald. Why do people bother having them?? An eight-year-old boy was left with a broken elbow in plaster for four weeks and broken trust in his father after being dropped from head height, a court heard today. The man, who was granted name suppression, was being sentenced in the Christchurch District Court on a charge of injuring his son with reckless disregard for his safety. The father was ashamed, and recognised the vulnerability of his son. He had attended a Stopping Violence programme, he said. Erber said the man's son refused to empty the dishwasher. He picked him up and dropped him from head height. He sentenced him to 250 hours community work and 12 months supervision, with conditions to undertake Stopping Violence and anger management programmes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tasmanian man claims he broke his newborn baby's ribs because the infant kicked him in the testicles while he was changing his nappy. Crown prosecutor Kate Brown yesterday told the Supreme Court in Launceston that 23-year-old Kenneth William Blake broke both the baby's legs, three of his ribs and caused bleeding to his eye and bruising to his cheek on different occasions in the six- week-old's life. His 21-year-old partner, Khristy Maree Fisher, pleaded guilty to the same charge on the basis she knew what her boyfriend was doing - and had done - and failed to seek medical attention for her baby. Ms Brown told Chief Justice Ewan Crawford the offences were committed at George Town on various occasions between February and March 2009. The violence against the baby was only discovered when a child health nurse made a scheduled visit to the pair's home. When told the baby needed urgent medical attention, Blake responded by saying he felt "like slitting some ----'s throat". Fisher later told police they had not sought medical attention for the leg injury in particular because they "thought it was just a fracture". The baby was taken to hospital by ambulance where he was given both morphine and codeine on top of paracetamol to alleviate the pain caused by his injuries. Neither parent attended or contacted the hospital at any point during his stay. Both the child and a sibling are no longer in the care of the parents. Fisher is now 4 1/2 months' pregnant. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Northland woman accused of murdering her 2-year-old daughter has blamed her former partner, saying he carried out a series of horrific beatings on the child because he saw her as a burden. Norefjell Davis, 36, elected to give evidence in the High Court at Whangarei yesterday and said her then partner Jade Petersen beat Jacqui Davis with a wire coat hanger, punched, kicked and dipped her head in a basin filled with water. The Northern Advocate reports Davis claimed Mr Petersen told her Jacqui deserved the beatings and that they were carried out over a long period of time. Davis claimed that once when Jacqui was sleeping in her cot, Mr Petersen - who she said was drunk at the time - pulled the child out and carried her like a handbag. After the couple left Auckland and stayed with friends in Awanui, Davis said she saw Mr Petersen holding a pillow over Jacqui's face and saw him punch her. On other occasions, she said he would cover the baby's mouth with his hand. Not long after they moved to Miro Place in Kaitaia, Davis said he beat Jacqui with a wire coat hanger. Mr Petersen would also find other things, such as drumsticks and a fire stoker, to beat her with. Davis claimed that other beatings included Mr Petersen standing on the child with both feet as well as putting her head in a basin filled with water. The night before Jacqui died, Davis said he shoved food in the child's mouth using a spoon when she struggled to eat her dinner. He also threw her to the ground and kicked her repeatedly, she said, telling the court she begged him to stop. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A Hastings mother has pleaded guilty to assaulting three of her children, including piercing the groin of her 5-month-old son with a safety pin. Michelle Jane Donaldson, 39, appeared in Hastings District Court and admitted assaulting a 15-year-old daughter, sons aged 9 and 5 and her partner in offending that occurred over a three-year period beginning in 2008. Her convictions were entered on Tuesday, the same day news broke that a 10-week-old baby had been admitted to Hawke's Bay Hospital with "significant non-accidental injuries", thought to include multiple fractures. It was also the day manslaughter accused Trent Hapuku appeared briefly in High Court at Napier. Hapuku is charged in relation to the suspicious death of 5-month-old Flaxmere girl Mikara Reti. Donaldson's convictions, including common assault, assault with a blunt instrument and two counts of assault on a child, arose from striking her daughter across the back with a broomstick, knocking out two of her son's teeth by punching him in the mouth, slapping her 5-month-old son to the head with such force it caused him to roll onto his side, forcibly thrusting a feed bottle into his mouth after he refused to feed and piercing his skin with a safety pin while changing his nappy. She told officers she became angry and "loses it" and lashes out at whatever is in front of her. |

| 1201679 | 2011-05-12 05:16:00 | It should never be 'framed' as anything other than brutality and torture. Utter scum of the earth - community work bullshit - death penalty please. After WW2 Nazis were hung for committing atrocities such as this, why has this changed? |

| 1201680 | 2011-05-12 05:39:00 | Then again a 10 year old boy in Hastings ( with an accomplist ) has been accused of sexual violation of a 16 year old female. So after having kids should we knock them off before they can do that? Not really serious but it does make you wonder. |
