1201486 2011-05-11 13:20:00 My ASUS Laptop locked up while browsing the web earlier; completely locked up, caps lock light wasn't responding or anything. I turned the Laptop on and off, when it started to boot back up I was prompted with this message, "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." After that I went into the BIOS to check the boot sequence, BIOS didn't even recognize that there was a hard drive present. I took the laptop apart and visually checked the Hard drive and other components since I had it open, no apparent damages. I know what it sounds like, the hard drive is "fried," but does anyone know of any other prognosis? I have a lot of important things on that hard drive and rather not have to replace it, did I miss something? Any other things to try? Do the cables go bad? The laptop is only a year and a half old, and well taken care of. Please help. Thank you. stevonavitch (16368)
1201487 2011-05-11 13:33:00 If the BIOS shows no hard drive it does not look good I'm sorry to say.

Do I take it you have no backups?

Have you access to a desktop PC? If so then remove the hard drive from the Asus laptop and connect it to the desktop probably with a SATA cable I would think as it's unlikely to be IDE given it's only 18 months old.

What make and model hard drive is it?

1201488 2011-05-11 13:35:00 Didn't even realize I should of posted this in the Press F1 forum, sorry ><. And no, I have not tried that yet, dont have a SATA cable, money is tight :/ but I guess that would be the next step... stevonavitch (16368)
1201489 2011-05-11 13:42:00 Yep. It should have been posted in the other forum but a kindly Moderator will possibly move the post for you.

And I was remiss too. I should have welcomed you so welcome to the forums.

May I take it you do not live in New Zealand? That's where the forum is based and local time here is now 12:43 am so most are asleep right now. :)

Please have a look at the last couple of lines of post #1 where he/she says it's a year and a half old.

I thought a year and a half was 18 months roughly but I guess some think differently.

My state of mind is radically different at 2am in the morning. Either that or my screen's too bright.

1201493 2011-05-11 20:37:00 Hard drives die. They are partly mechanical. Even good quality hard drives die.
This is why we techs bang o about keeping backups.

You'll get the drive replaced under warranty.
