1201104 2011-05-10 14:42:00 So the evil b*stards at MS just bought Skype.

I guess this is the end of "secure" and private Skype, good rates... Skype for linux, Skype for Andriod and IOS...

Ah well, it was good while it lasted...

So what happens to MSN/Windows Live Messenger? Will the services converge?

This plain sucks.

1201108 2011-05-10 20:58:00 They paid a premium for it too, so you've gotta presume they're going to try and tie it in with their existing Live Messenger service.

Was kinda hoping that Google would get it, change everything to some description of an open standard like XMPP etc

Still, with all the big-players putting bids on it, you can presume it's to incorporate into their own existing products to give them an edge?

1201109 2011-05-10 21:11:00 Secure? Private?

Everything was encrypted 256-bit AES (and thus illegal in India and China).

Sure Skype have a backdoor BUT it's still a hell of a lot better than the likes MSN or Yahoo or ICQ/AIM.

Yep. MSN has 300 million regular users? Bring them all to Skype, add to that all mobile customers when they have total supremacy lay the smack down on them by charging a monthly fee for everything - except of course for Windows Phone users, they should have it free to sell more phones :)

1201111 2011-05-10 21:35:00 Get ready for "Pay Skype" paulw (1826)
1201112 2011-05-10 22:04:00 Get ready for "Pay Skype" It already is.

They already have a paid service, have done for ages.

Makes sense that MS brought it,after all it just business, and they are looking toward the future, not just online chat, but incorporated into mobile devises that are currently being manufactured, along with plans for the future.

The purchase price of $8.5bn could be money well spent.

Its not the first time skype has been sold anyway, ebay owned it for a while.
The acquisition is the second in Skype's eight-year history. In October 2005 it was bought by eBay for $2.5bn, but was 70% sold in October 2009 to a consortium of private equity and venture capitalists. One article (www.guardian.co.uk)

I think he (as did I) meant for the use of Video Chat and the like.

Ebay is no where as evil as M$.
