2011-09-08 22:08:00 | It's tough if not impossible to build a gaming pc on a tight budget, Overseas I always see the 3 core Athlon's and Phenoms reccomended but I can't find them available here. You definately have to make some compromises. If you can stretch for a quad core phenom it's the better choice but if you have to settle for a dual core athlon it will still work for most games, just don't expect to play the latest games on a slow CPU and onboard graphics. The 7050PV onboard mentioned earlier can be tweaked to give 125 fps in quake3 at 800 x 600 (random I know, it's a really old game but I've personally done this).

2011-09-08 22:19:00 | Oblivion and skyrim anyone? Those are the sort of games I want to play, and my current pc can play oblivion on low, so almost anything would be better... | skeptile2 (16539) | |
2011-09-09 01:25:00 | Stretch to $155, its worth it. www.elive.co.nz Yeah enermax is good (from what ive heard). +1 Does an enermax tomahawk 400W power supply sound good? Yes I would replace the PSU. Anything under 400 watts will probably die / fail sooner or later. Or something will fail (that you connect to the mobo). And if its a Hyena power supply, I would definitely replace it +1 Oblivion and skyrim anyone? Those are the sort of games I want to play, and my current pc can play oblivion on low, so almost anything would be better... Skyrim Requirements look to be fairly high, are you going to run windows 7 64bit?

Have a read through this article, remember the parts in NZ could cost a bit more www.tomshardware.com An alternative is to get say a (NOT P4 or celeron ) 3Ghz dual core PC off trademe & upgrade the vid card & PSU. Its basicly equivalent to what I have & runs games OK on lower res ingame settings |

2011-09-09 07:46:00 | ok 3 things. first, thanks everyone so far for your help :) second, I am getting one part from my dad for my birthday, so I will choose the most expensive for that, otherwise I already have a tower, hdd, and (depending on motherboard) a power supply. third, I am also wondering if its possible to run windows xp on half a gig of ram? my other stick just failed, and i now only have half a gig. thanks | skeptile2 (16539) | |
2011-09-09 08:49:00 | Maybe your dad could buy you a basic MB with integrated graphics. I have a Gigabyte AM3 with ati 4250 and its graphics are better than my once mighty 9800pro AGP. $30 will get you a second hand sempron 140 which may even unlock to a dual core. Then, less than $50 will get you some ddr3 RAM and you are good to go. If the AGP card still works, sell it. Occasionally they go for a surprising amount on trademe. The MB is a 24 pin one though so you'd need to cough up $12 for one of those adaptors. It's the best I can think of that's cheap and can still potter along on an old power supply.

2011-09-09 09:30:00 | hmmm, im thinking of getting the asus mb i mentioned earlier, and maybe some kind of athlon II, but that may need a 400W power supply, which would add to the cost, not including ram. so basically, if i start at 2 gigs, then I can get more for xmas. so if the core is approx. $100, and the mb is $90, and the power supply is $70, and the ram is about $30, it comes to about $300, but at least one of those parts is from my dad. ill probably be running xp pro to start with, but might upgrade to 7 home, if i can save up. | skeptile2 (16539) | |
2011-09-09 09:30:00 | I'd say get the cpu from your dad, if you want to play skyrim aim for atleast a phenom II X4 840 or maybe a i3 2100 (its dual core though), buy the motherboard yourself, get Asus or Gigabyte. DDR3 RAM is fairly cheap around $12.5/gb. Yes you can run xp on 512mbs. It needs at least 64mbs to run. BTW intergrated graphics will almost definitely not run skyrim. www.game-debate.com

2011-09-09 11:52:00 | Hmmm very good point about integ graphics, but don't forget right now ill be playing oblivion, because skyrim doesnt come out for a while yet, but ill play that on mydads comp, which is mega epic. Also ill be playing steam gamed like tf2 and halflife 2. and if I have enough money, ill buy a new graphics card to conpensate. | skeptile2 (16539) | |
