1202193 2011-05-15 04:04:00 Hello all once again, I'm just wondering here who's a systems administrator and how many users you support, no identifying stuff, just trying to figure out what the real deals like.

how many dc's do you have, which roles are deployed and how many forests/domains do you control.

and last but not least, what is your #1 tip for a newbie?

1202194 2011-05-15 04:44:00 You're only talking about Windows sysadmins aren't you? I think there are a few people here who look after non-windows environment... somebody (208)
1202195 2011-05-16 01:28:00 about 130 users, single forest / domain, 2 domain controllers...1 at primary office, 1 at backup datacentre. I think Im gonna put a 3rd 1 in at our Wellington office as well.

No 1 tip: If you muck around with something for long enough you will eventually screw it up. Test labs are your friend.

1202196 2011-05-16 01:43:00 Aprox 150 users, single domain, 4 DC's (2 at head office(VM's), one at each major remote site(physical))

Rolls on teh DCs? Pretty much just file and print (well DNS of course) our secondary at head office is also exchange, every thing else has its own VM.

Tip: Be user friendly, its not a case of you being smart and everyone else is dumb (I've met more than one sys admin with this attitude), its a case of people having different skills. If people don't feel they can talk to you, you're only making life hard for your self/restricting your self from progressing.

two citrix servers, 1 SAN, no domain
heaps of secondary servers wiki, SQL, licenses, firewall, music etc

1202199 2011-05-16 02:06:00 You can laugh, I've had to reboot my Ubuntu to fix weird problems too, sometimes problems that are weirder than what Windows manages to come up with. Agent_24 (57)

1202202 2011-05-16 02:46:00 I admin multiple tiny domains for various small businesses & occasionally get called in to be a gofer for a bank IT department. Small businesses are a completely different kettle of fish to medium/large businesses because the customer won't allow you to set policies to improve manageability of the network, and after you spec out equipment to fit their budget, they always come up with new requirements that can not be achieved without blowing the budget.
