1201418 2011-05-11 05:45:00 This has been a bit of a bug bear of mine for the past few weeks - the lack of options to purchase digital content in New Zealand.

In other countries around the world they have systems of allowing users to pay for the content they want to view, good examples are iTunes, Netflix, Sky Player etc but none of them allow users the same options as pirating material.

If I search for a TV show on a torrent site, I am instantly greeted with several options - I can download the latest episode, or the latest series in whichever quality I choose (from the search I've done I can see 4 different levels of quality for one episode). I would HAPPILY pay someone to download this content, but oddly I can't.

If you were given the option to pay would you? A guy on Fair Go last week said he shared the same dialema - wanting to pay for content but nobody wanted to sell it to him.

EDIT: BTW in terms of content I mean TV Shows, Movies and Music.

1201419 2011-05-11 05:54:00 Yes I would pay, if I could be guaranteed that the downloaded item was 'payload' free and that the quality of the download was appropriate to the content. Plus, for instance, I would not expect to pay more than I could get the same content elsewhere.

I already do this with CASPA on my TiVo - the content is time-bombed, so I have to watch it within a certain period before it self-destructs, but I only pay $6.95 for a 'new' (it's a relative term) release movie and can get TV programs/mini-series for around $2.00 an episode.

1201420 2011-05-11 05:58:00 I'd pay for dlc if you got it DRM free and the price was reasonable. IE online retailers should factor in the fact that not everyone can download a full HD 2.3gb movie on their internet plan. E.g movie + extra internet = $15. DVD = $9. Me = Facepalm. icow (15313)
1201421 2011-05-11 06:02:00 I believe there are a few ISPs going down the track of free bandwidth from specified sites - I think I have seen a Woosh ad on TV recently that states Trademe and a couple of other sites. I think Vodafone have an arrangement with Sky....

Telecom do this with CASPA/TiVo.

1201422 2011-05-11 06:11:00 I'd pay if it was for information that I needed ie speciallist information. Bobh (5192)

That's a great point you make, you can download movies from iTunes for $25 but you don't get a disk and you can only play it on iTunes or an apple device :annoyed:

1201424 2011-05-11 06:20:00 I do pay for content already as I buy CDs and DVDs. I have a Vinyl collection too.

But I would also like to transfer the content to other media.

1201425 2011-05-11 06:28:00 Can you not already do this with iTunes? and or with CASPA/TiVo or with Sky?? stu161204 (123)
1201426 2011-05-11 06:32:00 I wouldnt bother. If I wanted to record something, I'll just record it off the tuner. I see 23k bittorrent users have just been sued for downloading the expendables Speedy Gonzales (78)
1201427 2011-05-11 06:32:00 I already do pay for digital content, although I generally strip the DRM off it the second I get my hands on the files.

I also feel that the prices on a lot of things are still too high, and a lot of stuff simply isn't available here - makes it just a wee bit difficult to legitimately buy something when nobody will sell it to you :groan:.
