| 1230271 | 2011-09-11 01:39:00 | I've installed Ubuntu 11.4 along side Windows 7 on my desktop but have just found out that there is no driver for my current dongle Cisco WUSB600N V2. So which N dongle should the forum suggest I get to maximise Ubuntu compatibility? A second question is can anyone give me a logical reason why my netbook (asus ee 901 2g RAM, +64g SSD, Ralink RT2860.) which has XP and Ubuntu 10.4 (Wubi) running on it be unable to connect via wifi in nz? I installed it while in the UK and used it as my primary OS for 14 months where it connected effortlessly to routers at peoples homes (default ones supplied by BT, Sky, Virgin), hotels, airports and even trains but back in nz it cant connect to anything with anything other than open. Currently I'm using a plugin dlink usb dongle which is a little unstable but works. Probably just going to reinstall it and see what happens. Connecting via XP is of course flawless. A. |

The problem is that the manufacturers tend to change the chip on their cards without even changing the model number on the box! Hence what works for person 1 may not work for person 2! A site to find out whether your chipset is supported is: http://linuxwireless.org/ Something that can get out of trouble is to install ndiswrapper which allows you to use the MS Windows driver. |

| 1230273 | 2011-09-12 02:37:00 | Thanks for the address, I'll give it a go. The lazy sod that I am , I was hoping someone would say I bought model x or y from DSE/HN etc and it works fine. I am finding installing 11.04 dual boot alongside Win 7 to be much less smooth than installing 10.04 with Xp (Wubi). ie 1st attempt problem with partitioning, 2nd problem was that it wouldnt download anyupdates until another repository was activated -it knew they existed but couldnt download them (that was the first update attempt having just installed the os) and last night while trying to download the restricted extra's package directly via terminal the system crashed on the ms-font license agreement page and has taken out get-app or similar leaving a message that this must be fixed manually ?! Time to get out the disc and use the thermonuclear reinstall option Thanks for your suggestions A. |
