1230085 2011-09-10 01:13:00 My old computer, which used to have 1 gig of ram (ddr) now only has half a gig, due to one stick failing. Now xp pro wont start. I've tried safe mode, but whatever option i pick, it goes to the xp logo and restarts. Done a memory test, passed it. skeptile2 (16539)

Do you have an XP CD?

1230087 2011-09-10 01:17:00 Check that the BIOS isnt trying to run the memory in dual channel mode. It should probably automatically disable when one stick is removed but it might have screwed up or something. icow (15313)
1230088 2011-09-10 01:21:00 Yep, got a cd. I'll try that when i get home. The xp manual says a minimum of 64 mbs... skeptile2 (16539)
1230089 2011-09-10 01:25:00 Also, I reset the cmos, but ill check. skeptile2 (16539)
1230090 2011-09-10 01:46:00 What motherboard is in this?? Sounds like an AMD. If it is did you install SP3 on it recently? Sounds like its crashing / rebooting when it gets to the XP logo Speedy Gonzales (78)
1230091 2011-09-10 03:16:00 The RAM errors could have damaged Windows, try the Disable restart and then perhaps a repair install on it. pctek (84)
1230092 2011-09-10 04:10:00 I put the xp disk in, selected repair and rebooted. Now it works! Thanks people!!! Although it takes about 5 mins to start tho... skeptile2 (16539)
1230093 2011-09-10 04:43:00 run msconfig, post a list of all the startup apps running. icow (15313)
1230094 2011-09-10 10:14:00 nah, after the first start, i restarted it and it went waaay faster, then i defragged it, and now it runs close to normal. can even play halo 1 on it on medium graphics. skeptile2 (16539)
