Some good conversation about the issue there.

They said some time ago (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) they were going to change it.

1202733 2011-05-17 10:23:00 I have several American friends that visit. I explain the turning left rule, they go off and come back saying it was a great system. Wish they had it in the States.
I know I have asked this before but lets hear it from professional drivers like Cabbies and Couriers and maybe Bus drivers. They are the ones we should be consulting.
My job entailed a lot of city driving and I saw the advantage of the present rule every day.
It is no problem to check behind to see if straight through traffic is approaching and make a decision as to whether to turn or give way. Then again that sort of decision may be difficult for the average weekend warrior.

1202734 2011-05-17 11:18:00 It doesn't matter what the rules are (I personally have no issue with the way it is now - I was a courier, averaging around 6000km per month in and around Auckland for 5 years some time ago), but many drivers do not know (or do not care) how the rules work.

Most cannot tell a Stop sign from a Give Way sign from an uncontrolled intersection and what rules should be applied when.

Most motorists I encounter on the road don't even understand the right hand rule, which is probably the simplest rule of the road (probably because it's common sense).

So change 'em, don't change 'em, it won't make a damn difference to the idiots have drawn their driving licence out of a lucky dip.

The only people it may help are the hapless tourists who have never heard of our current 'give-way-to-right-turning-traffic-when-turning-left' road rule...

1202735 2011-05-17 16:02:00 Too true johcar,

The new rule is suppose to reduce intersection crashes by 7%. I suspect thats only because everyone is forced to learn the new rule.
If they were forced to learn the old rule I would expect to reduce crashes by way more than 7%.

1202736 2011-05-17 22:17:00 I remember when the new current giveway rules came in. At first accidents at intersections were reduced because nobody was sure who was supposed to give way to who. Everybody stopped and thought about the rules before they proceeded into the intersection.

It will take drivers weeks or months to get used to the new rules. I do think that we should never have changed the rules and reverting back to the old rules is the right way to go.

1202737 2011-05-18 01:18:00 I dont care if they change the rules I will obey the new rules. I am conformist sorta person anyway. prefect (6291)
1202738 2011-05-18 01:46:00 Does anyone really care !

5 years delivering meals on wheels and a further 5 years doing community patrol, tells me the same idiots' will still be out there.

A shame we only reported street lights out and pot holes, when the biggest hazard are cellphones.

1202739 2011-05-18 02:18:00 In my experience there are quite a number of people who don't know or don't obey the current rules. This from a guy who drove trucks for up to 11 hrs per day and 6 days per week. Snorkbox (15764)

Trucks like Fendalton tractors have the right of way, didn't you know, lol.

As soon as they put the return to the old rules in The Press here, people seemed to think they were valid/changed, need the car, otherwise would have run into them to make the point.
