| 1231668 | 2011-09-16 23:24:00 | We have been given an older Compaq laptop which has had the hard drive wiped. We tried putting an XP OS CD in it but got the message that no valid cd rom drivers were found. I then got a copy of Windows 98 along with the floppy boot disc and tried that. The unit read the floppy and asked whether to boot from cdrom, or boot with cdrom assist. Whichever selection we make it then comes back and tells us that no valid cd drivers were found. What should we do?? Thanks, John |

| 1231674 | 2011-09-17 00:49:00 | All versions of Windows XP CD are bootable. In order to boot from CD/DVD-ROM you need to set the boot sequence. Look for the boot sequence under your BIOS setup and make sure that the first boot device is set to CD/DVD-ROM. You can then perform the following steps to install Windows XP: Step 1 - Start your PC and place your Windows XP CD in your CD/DVD-ROM drive. Your PC should automatically detect the CD and you will get a message saying "Press any key to boot from CD". The boot disc activates, I get a question asking whether I want to boot using the cd or not (choice of 3 scenarios). I choose use the cd and it then shows it has loaded a cd driver. Next it tells me "no device found" and goes to a dos prompt. I am starting to suspect a faulty cd player. | phatman (1352) | ||
| 1231677 | 2011-09-17 04:00:00 | not really as the bios is suppose to load a basic driver set so that you can install from a disk or CD potentially if all else fails you may need to update the bios via floppy if you can find a bios update.. or try replacing the CD drive with another maybe the CD drive is faulty ( welcome to the undying problems associated with computer repairs ) | milkster1976 (16554) | ||
