1204608 2011-05-24 08:31:00 More specifically the engine on the back - a Briggs and Stratton four stroke.

The starter cord won't retract and somebody reckons it needs a new spring. How complicated is it to take the top off and replace the spring? Is anything likely to fly out? Are any special tools needed? How long would it take - an hour, two?

Thanks

1204609 2011-05-24 09:29:00 Normaly on a small engine the starter cord assembly is held on with 4 small nuts/screws on the corners of the housing. Undo and remove 5 or 10 minutes nothing will fly out at that stage. Then you should be able to see just what is wrong or just take that assembly to the nearest repair place and ask them to sort it out for you. That should not be very expensive. CliveM (6007)

1204613 2011-05-24 15:57:00 I just re-wind the spring a little tighter the first few times this happens.

No need to go to a lawnmower doctor for first aid. Just be careful of that spring!

1204614 2011-05-24 21:41:00 Here's what the bill said:

"Disassembled starter system. Cleaned and replaced spring.
Sharpened blades
Adjusted brake linkage and checked pulleys.

Starter spring $12
Sundries $5
Labour - 2hrs $134
Total $151"

This is not the first time they've had it in for the spring, but then it was a "quick fix" and a lot cheaper. Also I hadn't asked them to do anything about the brakes and pulleys.

I think I know what my rights are - I'm just checking about the mechanical side of things which I don't know much about.

Looked at the B&S link that Feersum posted - the manuals seem to be just general oil change and airfilter stuff.

1204616 2011-05-26 12:46:00 Usually if the spring is not broken, but the rope won't rewind, the cause is a dry starter clutch. Inject some oil into the hole at the top of the clutch and jiggle it up and down to suck the oil in. You can change the rope without removing the pulley. Just pull the rope out fully. Hold the pulley firmly, cut the handle off and pull the rope out through the anchor hole in the pulley. Keep holding the pulley with the spring wound up. Thread a new rope with a knot on the end through the hole, pulley and rope guide in cowl. Hold rope and allow the spring to rewind under control. Refit the handle, having first pulled the rope out one turn.

If the rope has broken the spring will probably be doubled over and need replacing.

I figured the parts diagrams and listings would have been useful, at least from the assembly/disassembly point of view.:D
