1203819 2011-05-21 04:29:00 I'm going without food for 40 hours next weekend and need as many sponsers as possible!

I've raised almost $100 offline so far so thought I might try add to it!

Anyway, my profile is here (www.famine.org.nz) so if you could spare a few $$$ I'm sure it would be appreciated!

Cheers

1203821 2011-05-21 05:59:00 A great sentiment, but ultimately a futile gesture .

Trying to solve world hunger by raising a few bucks to give to aid agencies is like trying to get water from a well with a bucket with no bottom .

And the well is empty .

And the rope is too short .

And the winder handle is broken .

And rebels are shooting at the person at the well .

The people the 40 Hour Famine organisation are trying to help (mostly?) live in parts of the world that cannot support large populations - caused by lack of birth control (and lack of arable land, lack of water, no sanitation, no education, endemic civil war), so by providing a few meals is just prolonging the inevitable and perhaps even creating a false hope (which is just downright mean) .

And, no, I don't have an alternative . Just trying to be pragmatic .

We have plenty of people in this country on the bones of their arse - charity begins at home .

Good luck with your fundraising .

You're absolutely right, just missing the fact that humans are inherently selfish and greedy, and those two traits will forever keep this sad trend to continue and get even worse .

But hey, a good deed evolves from the littlest gestures .

Quite agree.

I read this book written by a guy who 30 years previously had taught in several southern African countries. He travelled from one end of Africa to the other with just one small flight the whole way. He said that in thirty years of charity it had done absolutely nothing for the countries he had taught in and he also said the least charitable people he met were the charity workers who would just drive straight past him in their flash Landcruisers or whatever.

1203826 2011-05-21 09:49:00 I think these famines are stupid.

We should be helping homeless and sick people in our own country.

1203827 2011-05-21 10:53:00 Although I support helping others through deeds like this, I believe that the actions of 40hr Famine don't really help the world in the long term. Sure $40 will feed 10 kids for a year... but then what? they apply for more 40hr famine money or do they just die. because now all the starving children in Siberia are saved world vision moved on to Bolowanzani or some other african town.

We should REALLY be focusing on WHY they are starving in the first place. Some guy came and had a yarn to us and showed some video that made me feel all happy instead of compelled to help. It made me feel anti help if anything.

It was about some kid who was too poor to go to school and was really hungry because the "hungry season was longer than usual" and deforestation had killed all the birds. Basically he ate the sago tree all day with his family. In the video all you could see were miles and miles of bush, and big patches of no bush, I have no idea why the hell he would need school. There is no need for it. the likes of him have survived 1000's of years without being westernized with schools. you don't need a PhD to survive. what good is school?

This kid had a good life, he lived in a stick and mud hut for sure but it wasn't unclean. He gets to run around all day and live life. I'd certainly like to do that for a while. Just live, no cares.

as for hungry season being long... tough s*it kid. there have always been tough seasons. its never easy unless you live in an industrialized western society. Even then we get food shortages.

Basically World vision would be better of planting trees and recreating the ecosystem rather than temporarily feeding the kids and family's for a few years. Rebuilding the environment is a more permanent solution and will help for generations. If you keep feeding them they become Dependant on you to survive.

Anyway, nothing against WV or any other organisations. I just think they take things the wrong way and do more harm than good in the long run. I myself will be joining my mates for a weekend in a tent with a packet of mini wheats and a cardboard box, we get to walk 2m for water :D. They are getting sponsored. I'm not :p

Their TV advertising would pay for a lot of food, etc.

Lurking.
