1231682 2011-09-17 03:34:00 Now I have a job I am going to start looking at getting my freenas box built, would people recommend a hardware or ZFS software raid? nedkelly (9059)
1231683 2011-09-17 03:44:00 There's been songs sung about Reenas Box.

Oops sorry, Spelling Mistakes. You said Freenas Box.

I'd better stop now before I get banned. ;)

1231684 2011-09-17 03:49:00 Rule of thumb is a hardware raid will always be better than a software raid, its just common sense really ones physical and the others virtual. milkster1976 (16554)
1231685 2011-09-17 04:23:00 I always thought that too but I have been hearing that ZFS is really great for a software raid on Freenas/Linux nedkelly (9059)

Bingo.

Depending on your use, you may be better with version 7 over 8 too, 8 seems to have lost a lot of functionality IE itunes server/torrent box.

1231687 2011-09-17 05:23:00 Hmm dont think I will be missing a torrent box seeing as we cant use them any more nedkelly (9059)
1231688 2011-09-17 10:19:00 i guess you also have to think about what the raid is being used for eg data redundancy or speed if its speed then you have to have a hardware setup otherwise you will be confined to the speed of your single partitioned drive thus defeating the purpose of a raid array milkster1976 (16554)
1231689 2011-09-17 10:27:00 I just want redundancy, If I wanted speed I would go Raid 1 Mirroring with sata3 hard drives nedkelly (9059)
1231690 2011-09-17 12:32:00 then either way wont really matter what ever is easiest or on hand will do the job software is usually easier to setup than hardware milkster1976 (16554)
1231691 2011-09-17 12:36:00 so im right back to where I started?
Looks like I will have to keep looking in to it.
