1231693 2011-09-17 02:14:00 My now gracefully aged desktop (built by Metla) runs like a dog, mainly because of games installed by my teenagers.

I've cleaned and defragged until the cows come home but its hopeless.

I've never played around with any OS but I do have the original XP Home installation disc so am nervously thinking of a new clean install. No idea what to do. I have backed up documents, pics etc on an external hd. I do not have SP1 and 2 on disc.

There is lots on the net about how to do this but I know the wise heads here will have suggestions.

One thing I don't understand is how to find and backup drivers. Or will XP have most anyway?

Finally, I chanced across this site which says a full repair is possible: www.informationweek.com

1231694 2011-09-17 02:17:00 Chuck the XP cd in reboot change the bootdisk in the BIOS to cd. Save settings. Reboot again. Wait for it to say press a key... press a key.. Then follow whats on the screen. You can use programs (which may not be free) to backup drivers. Or download them before you format (from the mobo maker's site). Save them to something / other than the hdd. Then run them after XP has been installed. Or you could use something like Nlite and slipstream them Speedy Gonzales (78)
1231695 2011-09-17 03:46:00 please no if your computer boots never ever reinstall the os as the odds of your drivers being on the installation disk is zero.
if you are going to reinstall anyway i use a program called double driver it is free and reliable, ( to back up your drivers. )
other wise the best thing to do is install Glarys Utilities use the one click optimization to clean your registry and fix all minor problems, then use Glarys startup manager and uncheck every box to stop your computer loading software at startup.
finally uninstall all software that you do not use,and as you have backed up your documents create a new user profile with administrative permissions then logout and log into your new account and delete the old account including all files,
basically XP will generate a brand new version of its registry and settings giving you a brand new computer.
this should only take an hour, once completed all you need to do is fine tune the operating system and you will be away laughing... ( Yes i am a qualified computer systems engineer ) p.s. PCWORLD i need a job you got any going lol thanks

Tut tut, You dithered and dithered the whole time I was there. Can't believe you haven't upgraded it by now.

Go see Greven - he'll do it.

LOL you are right. I have upgraded the video card. Mostly I use my lappie these days but if the big machine worked properly I'd use it more.

Anyone who's been in this work for a while will tell you that sounds good by just doing a clean out and making a new profile , but unfortunately that doesn't always work either.

Sometimes if a system is to badly damaged all the cleanouts in the world wont fix it. In fact on some PC's that I have run Glarys Utilities on, its actually made the system worse, not better, a couple to the point of not booting any more.

Sometimes the best bet is to simply save all your data and completely reinstall from fresh, that way you know the system is fresh.

1231700 2011-09-17 23:10:00 That PC will run beautifully with a clean install, I believe it was running an nforce chipset?

Drivers will be easy to find and install, Was it supplied with a motherboard manual?, that will identify what it is, otherwise it will be written on the actual motherboard...did that case have a window in it?

1231702 2011-09-18 04:37:00 well in my experience the only time a clean up and account refresh hasn't worked is when some idiot has messed around in the registry, simple solution this guy specifically stated he was not experienced you make out like finding drivers is a simple task lol sure sometimes you might just get lucky...
tell you what if he does a clean install and ends up with a bigger problem ill do him a special deal ill only charge him 250 and fix it myself lol
don't say you were not warned, (there is a reason why some of us go to school to learn this stuff )
