1231625 2011-09-16 21:31:00 As a community group we are wanting to get an internet connection to a DVR 80 meters external line of site distance. Which way should we go - cable or wireless? Have a budget of about $750. Appreciate any informed comments!
Thanks

1231626 2011-09-16 23:38:00 Personally I'd go cable as the wireless may have problems, the further away from the source the lower the signal strength. Ethernet cable can easily handle 100Mtrs before problems may start. wainuitech (129)
1231627 2011-09-17 00:05:00 Thanks - Black External Cat 5 be ok? Not looking for ultra performance here. stuffed (1469)
1231628 2011-09-17 02:06:00 The colour doesn't mean a lot, but external cable, designed to be outside would be better/harder wearing than std cable (they come in lots of different colours)My cables that run from the house to the workshop are all in electrical conduit, buried under ground, only std cable, mainly for protection -- its a real bugger if you are digging and cut through a cable :( wainuitech (129)
1231629 2011-09-17 02:18:00 Thanks again - would be in a 50mm duct stuffed (1469)
1231630 2011-09-17 03:37:00 Wainui: I have heard from an electrician that networking cable and electrical wires are not meant to run along side each other for straight lengths due to interference from the electrical current field, how have you overcome this issue? nedkelly (9059)
1231631 2011-09-17 03:49:00 No electrical wires in this duct. stuffed (1469)
1231632 2011-09-17 04:52:00 Use shielded network cable gary67 (56)

Correct. Move them or run it in a shielded tray.

Something like that, but make sure you turn the broadcast power down.
