1205540 2011-05-29 03:20:00 Wife's just got back from England and is, somewhat inevitably, comparing the cost of food - amazed at what you can get quantity wise for 10 pounds (taking the exchange rate into account) and the Brits are complaining it's expensive!

Here's Sainsbury's pitch at feeding your family of four for 50 quid (www.youtube.com) a week, with recipes on their website (http://www.sainsburys-feed-your-family.co.uk/) (may be of some use).

And just so you pet lovers don't miss out (www.youtube.com)....

Can you see our duopolies doing this?

1205541 2011-05-29 04:32:00 Well, where's some prices and ingredients?

I've gotten very good at spending almost nothing, you just have to know where to go - and it's sure not always the supermarket.

No need to shop anywhere else!! "We're assuming you'll have a few basic ingredients in your store cupboard, like oil and stock cubes, and we've listed them at the bottom of the page"

1205543 2011-05-29 04:42:00 Came back from SE Asia some time recently.
The food is cheaper incl seafood but the wages are very low. NZ doesn't look that bad when more than one family live together and $25/day might be a common salary.

She had a stop-over in Brunei on the way out and the way back and was able to "eat out" very cheaply (by NZ standards).

1205545 2011-05-29 05:48:00 Brother returned to the uk yesterday after 3 week stay here. He reckons is bloody expensive here for clothes and shoes. Petrol was cheaper here then the uk. And supermarket food more expensive here while eating out was cheaper plod (107)

OK. It's rip-off.
49.99 pounds is $100.80

I looked up the same ingredients on Woolworths. It came to NZ$84.64.
Woolworths is itself the most expensive way to buy a lot of this stuff.

I never buy meat, veges, milk, flour, fruit or certain other bits and pieces from supermarkets.

Looks like nothing has changed since then apparently. :)
