2011-05-31 21:03:00 | Sigh. Of the 9500 there are a bunch that, I for example, wouldn't get because I have no experience/quals in it. So let's eliminate them. Still quite a few - let's apply for the bakery job. hey, I can actually make bread even. Buy no, I don't have actual job experience doing it, and if I was younger I might get away with it - apply for a trainee role, but not now. I'm too old for trainees roles. Who says? The employers. I've tried it. Pity, I wouldn't mind that actually. So, let's go with stuff I can do and don't need to learn. You know what I get a lot? I don't have enough IT for the IT roles and for the non-IT roles, I apparently have too much IT. Er. Right. Add age, add the fact I had a business myself, not once but twice, never mind how well it did, and that puts them off too. It should be a plus right? Well no, apparently that's a no because I'm not used to a boss. Ok there a few jobs left I could actually get, assuming I win over the other 50 or so applicants, and the 10 or so they interview, but sometimes it comes down to do they like you or not too. Still there are the one or two I've succeeded with. Just as well we don't have to do this every year. So saying 9500 jobs is a bit of a joke. Even you Chill - how many of the medical jobs would you even get an interview for if you applied? Be real, there are not that many jobs for any of us, we have to stick with our career area once we get past being able to convince an employer we're doing our training. I'm in a similar position, I cannot go back to my trade due to my shoulder that's just been operated on for the second time there are no jobs in management here that I could do. I can't get other work for the same reasons, I have been told I'm either too old to retrain (43), can't do the physical aspect, been self employed, they didn't like me etc so what am I supposed to do. I can't even get a job as a stop go person as that needs quals too.

2011-06-01 06:17:00 | Yes but all of the other people who were at this same training session I was at were under 30, without a doubt. I was also the only white guy :-/

2011-06-01 08:52:00 | [QUOTE=Snorkbox;1021529] It's very confusing to me, at the moment, to work out what the National Party actually wants. I don't find it difficult to know what they want - simply to keep themselves in power- the perks for MPs are more addictive than heroin or cocaine.

2011-06-01 09:40:00 | So... what we need is a Buy NZ Made ethos. Keep yer money in yer pocket if an item has been imported, put yer hand in yer pocket if a kiwi (or immigrant) has worked in NZ to produce the item. And have your holiday in NZ instead of overseas. We chunder far too much of our capital into imported short lifespan items, particulary with toys and tech.

2011-06-01 10:22:00 | Good idea but we don't actually make much in NZ anymore. :( And therein lies the problem - one can trace it back to Rogernomics and the Lange Government of 1984 (prophetic date). Everyone else with larger populations can make things cheaper than we can because of economies of scale - definitely true and Ron Brierley and his investment group BIL, made a fortune putting Kiwis out of work, and asset stripping NZ companies. The thing people forgot is what is to happen to the thousands of workers that this new economic reality displaced onto the growing mass of unemployed - well the taxpayer had to pick up the tab and dish out social welfare. As if this revolution was not enough, the next national government introduced the employment contracts act, effectively cutting wages from the poorest sector of the nation's workforce and casualising thousands of workers jobs. Many had to work 2 or more jobs just to make ends meet, keep a roof over the heads of their families and feed them. New Zealand as someone wanted it, but certainly not the majority of the population, and I doubt that things have really got all that much better since I retired to Australia in 2005. I am not a socialist, very far from it, but everyone who is a citizen of a country should be entitled to a fair deal and should not be marginalised and impoverished by a government looking after a small elite sector of society, and unhappily that has been NZ's case since about 1987. Saying that the unemployed "enjoying" the generosity of the dole at the working taxpayers expense, should get off their arses and find a job is only reasonable when there exist jobs for them to find - and they do not exist in sufficient a number to scatch the surface of the problem.

2011-06-01 10:36:00 | Good idea but we don't actually make much in NZ anymore. :( No, we don't, and we are not likely to now either. The chance to become a Switzerland of the South Pacific went out of the window with the Douglas reforms. And yet.... countries like Switzerland and Germany make products that other countries, especially the rising Asian countries, and Japan too when that was ascending, beat a path to their doors to buy. Take Germany...."The booming Chinese economy is a natural market for German industrial products. German exports to China rose 55% in the first half of 2010." "German manufacturers’ combination of engineering excellence, impeccable quality, and technical innovation enables them to command a premium price around the world. I can take a couple of things from your post when sending a CV Never disclose your age, its not a requirement . Don't give them detail of past employment if its not relevant for job applying for which leads me to taylor your CV for the job you are going for . Telling them you have run your own business twice, tells them that if you get a third chance you are out of there . :2cents:
