too tight

1205364 2011-05-29 01:36:00 Currently my ADSL is down, Telecom don't know when it will be fixed, I'm using dialup... it's pretty slow, especially when you're used to 14Mbit

Feel sorry for anyone who still has to use it on a daily basis :horrified

This is not a fairy tale, but once upon a time we used zfree or freenet as dial ups. I was always sorry when zfree ceased to exist, for us it was reasonably fast as a dialup, so long as I wasn't trying to log in when the kids were just home from school or around Telecom off-peak phone time clicking in.
Along came 'progress' and we just paid for something that was often less than an improvement. But it sure made the big T rich.
Sigh :waughh:

1205365 2011-05-29 03:01:00 I think I only got an Internet connection (and, in fact a PC) after all that sort of thing had gone...

First we had dialup, had that for about 2 years I think, maybe longer. Then got 256k DSL, then 2Mbit, then they 'unleashed' and it wasn't any better (too far away from exchang) and then recently, the upgrade to ADSL2+ and it's around 14Mbit now.

With all those upgrades its easy to forget what we started with... but even over-use DSL capped at 64k is about twice as fast as our dialup ever was.

1205366 2011-05-29 04:45:00 I've found that capped BB speeds to dialup speed definitely faster than dialup by using a actual dialup modem .. Nomad (952)

1205368 2011-05-31 13:13:00 It's more that web pages are more media and graphic intensive now so take ages to load on dialup. They are optimised for broad band speed.

My parents are only very occasional internet users so have dialup. I was trying to show them a particular website and had to give up because the loading time was soooo painful.

What makes it worse is having the AV program trying to download a monster (for dialup) update at the same time.

+1

Our families first internet connection was with Zfree. the speeds were honestly not bad, and were almost the basic 256kbps broadband speeds of today (this is like back in 2000/2001 though, so the internet was more basic back then.

So about that time you would have been 4 or 5 years old and your family allowed you to use the internet and you remember what it was like???

I've been using computers from a very young age.

I have a good memory.

I even remember me as a 2 year old being able to work our old vcr (and it was an old old one, and included changing channels on the tv etc...
