1205480 2011-05-28 23:53:00 The poison in our society continues to spread.

The way to address a problem is for those affected by it to accept ownership of it personally and change their ways.

The way not to deal with it is to create a fantasy world where its everybody elses fault, and thus justify the behavior.

www.stuff.co.nz

Even the headline is part of the delusion, why not expose this for what it is?

That's our money being spent, to poison child abusers against us.

Pitiful.

1205482 2011-05-29 01:40:00 There's one academic at least who doesn't use rose-tinted glasses to look at history:

However, the report has been criticised for painting too rosy a picture of pre-European times. Maori history professor Paul Moon, of Auckland University of Technology, dismissed the idea abuse began after the Europeans came. "The proposition that missionaries introduced violence, it's one of those allegations that entered the historical bloodstream and once it's in that bloodstream, it's hard to get out. I would want to see evidence."

He cited the fact Maori girls were sometimes killed because they were considered less useful than males. "If children were treated as sacred items, how do you explain female infanticide?" Moon said the report's reliance on oral histories and lullabies also raised doubts over its reliability.

Giving an excuse to maori who are practising child abuse is not solving anything.

We are all living in the 21st century, with all the education and modern conveniences that go with a modern civilised society. (It's not a perfect system, but it's a damn sight better than what was here 250 years ago!)

These maori who are being excused by the author of this stupid report (Dr Hone Kaa - is that a maori qualification before your name? I don't think so!) were brought up in the same society that they currently live in and have absolutely no excuse for not knowing what is acceptable and not acceptable in terms of today's society and values.

It's time to look forward and get on with things, instead of looking backwards and finding excuses and reasons for misbehaving (and killing kids)!!

1205483 2011-05-29 22:18:00 What I observe around town in terms of the extreme ends of parenting are parents that sit on their butts and bellow out instructions, threats and abuse to their kids. The kids naturally are saturated with this every day and have learnt to ignore it and accept it as normal... then it filters through into teens behaviour.

Stuff like "Come here or I'll kill you" (or whack you). "Get in the car or I'll kill you".

It's almost like the "...I'll kill you" bit is a default tearm of endearment - something you only say with your loved ones... but it sounds terrible every time.

That comment can hardly be justified. Hone Kaa was the first maori to graduate from Harvard, and earned his doctorate there. :(

That doesn't bode well for those that follow.

I wonder how Harvard feel about having their brand devalued like that.

He should be charged with treason.

1205486 2011-05-29 23:14:00 What I'm getting at, is that he didn't rely on "historical (maori) methods" to attain that qualification, he used the standard method that most everyone uses - i . e . going to university .

Something that would not have been available to him in a "traditional" (maori) setting .

He has adapted to current societal norms - and so should the people he is excusing .

1205487 2011-05-30 00:24:00 I believe that report as much as I believe Maori were conservationist. mikebartnz (21)
