| 1205195 | 2011-05-27 11:41:00 | Shocked and saddened to hear this then talk about with good mates ... I got into a very deep and meaningful with a few friends about suicide and organ donation ... basically one of my friends friends had committed suicide (wont go into details) but he was an organ donor and sadly left a message to his wife saying that he hoped his last act would give somebody else a better life. He had a degenerative brain disease that caused him excruciating pain that couldn't be controlled, obviously had no quality of life and decided he'd had as much as he could take. Unfortunately, the method he chose to end his life also robbed him of his greatest wish, that his organs could give life to others ... or at least improve or prolong their quality of life. Apparently his organs were deprived of oxygen for too long and useless ... his wife was delayed in getting home to find him and ring the ambo's ... She was aware of his wish but in no way helped or conspired to assist ... just bad timing cause she never new when the day may come. Now we have six grown men crying into our beers and without thinking, going through all the methods of suicide we knew about (the usual I suppose) and not one of us could think of any other way but driving into a lampost ... not 100% sure to kill, organs could be damaged, etc. Drug overdose ... organ toxicity. Etc, etc, etc Just out of interest and maybe open up discussion on two seemingly taboo subjects in NZ ... what would you do in the same situation as this sadly missed donor ?? P.S. This did not happen in NZ ............ Another P.S. Doctors wouldn't consider euthanasia |

However, I don't think discussing the best way of committing suicide in order to preserve your organs is a very productive discussion. Not all donors get to donate their organs for a variety of reasons, even when they die with their bodies in a good condition. There is a chance his medical condition would have prevented some of his organs being used anyway. If you want to do something more positive, then sign up as a blood donor or even discuss with your GP about being a live-organ donor (kidney, liver or bone-marrow). |

Before you suggest that I make a living will which I have already done by the way and I have donated my whole body to any person who can use anything that is useful and remains to be cremated and tossed into the Hutt River. Suicide discussion seems to be a taboo subject for some reason and it's rather unfortunate for those that are left behind to grieve and ask themselves why did I not see this coming and what could I do to prevent same. |

Well I don't think it matters what method he used. You have to be alive - in the medical sense of the term - for organs to be of use. That's why, in hospital, they keep you hooked up to machines. Suicide tends to be done away from other people. |

| 1205204 | 2011-05-28 04:03:00 | pctek is correct. At the very least, your organs can only be harvested if you die in a critical care facility. The many other factors involved that may count against your organs being used are all on top of this. | AvonBill (11358) | ||
