1233683 2011-09-26 07:45:00 Hi all. Interesting issue with a mates PC. He was working away on it and suddenly the screen went blank.

Have swapped video card but that makes no difference.

When turning the PC on it goes through the POST OK and you can read all that on the screen. If I tap F2 it goes into BIOS and you can navigate around the BIOS, make changes etc no problems. It just doesn't boot up into the OS.

Funnily enough it won't boot into safe mode though. Constant F8 tapping just leads to the same blank screen as if it was just a normal boot.

There is a signal to the screen - constant green light on the LCD and you can tell the back light is on.

Have tried a repair install, swapping video card out, checking connections, removing the battery & waiting a while before putting it back in and rebooting. I'm all out of ideas but hopefully one of you might have a suggestion.

Thanks!

1233684 2011-09-26 07:50:00 Did you try a different monitor? Jen (38)
1233685 2011-09-26 07:55:00 Have tried a repair install,
Thanks!
And what happened? Did it actually see a current install of Windows or did it fail before that?

1233687 2011-09-26 09:30:00 Did you try a different monitor?

Yep - no difference.

Yep - it saw the current Windows install (XP Media Centre) and allowed me to do the repair but when it rebooted it still had the same issue.

And to PPp - all that has been done as well.

1233688 2011-09-26 09:39:00 Actually you should check two connections. The first one is the conecting line between computer and your monitor the second line is for conecting mainframe box and power. Check them Both. there are two plugs on the monitor. JasmineCassie (16555)
1233689 2011-09-26 09:52:00 Have you tried booting from the win CD? PPp (9511)
1233690 2011-09-26 21:25:00 Sounds to me like windows is corrupted, the fact that you can read the POST & BIOS screens would seem to indicate the hardware is functioning.
Could be a software or disk error maybe. Also if it has onboard video try that and/or check the BIOS settings.

Try a linux live CD or similar to prove the hardware is working, then see if you can access / test the hard drive.

1233691 2011-09-26 22:11:00 Sometimes after doing a repair install on a XP based computer you will get that blank screen, and wont allow you to go into safe mode either.

On SOME occasions the problem is one you wouldn't think of --- IE8.

Boot from the Windows CD, press R to enter the recovery console.

At the command prompt type in and do the following

Type CD ie8\spuninst.
Press ENTER
Type batch spuninst.txt.
Press ENTER (you'll see a load of files flashing past)
Type EXIT (when they have finished)
Press ENTER to restart the Computer

Make sure you dont boot from the CD again :)

If it was IE causing the problem the computer will now boot normally. (If not then theres another problem someplace.)

IE and windows updates will be toasted and wont work, so you have to download the full version on another Computer windows.microsoft.com then install from that.

Install it, and IE / windows updates will now work OK.
