| 1206431 | 2011-06-02 19:39:00 | On May 21, researchers at Martin Aircraft, an aviation company, strapped a dummy pilot to their latest prototype and sent the radio-controlled aircraft up towards whats normally been airplane territory. (www.smartplanet.com) The stunt was conducted to test out the jetpacks ballistic parachute safety system. ibid: ...the highest altitude a jetpack has soared was roughly 50 feet. Since then, that mark has now been bested by, oh, 4,950 feet (NZ= 1.5 kilometers). The company has also reported details and a video of their latest feat. After reaching peak altitude at an unheard of rate of 800 feet per minute, the jetpack descended to a level of 3,000 feet where the engine was cut out off, causing the the parachute to deploy. By the time it landed, it had been airborne for nine minutes and 46 seconds, shattering their previous world record of seven minutes and 15 seconds. |

| 1206434 | 2011-06-02 20:52:00 | Saw the V Jetpack at Parachute Music Festival this year. It was only a short 15-odd second flight, but it was *so* cool!!! | Chilling_Silence (9) | ||

| 1206437 | 2011-06-02 21:46:00 | My opinion - A useless and unpractical device. Who would ever actually buy one? It can never be made safe to fly. The parachute system will not work if the user is less than 100 foot or so of the ground. And yes I do have considerable experience with parachutes. I suspect that they are just trying to creat an interest in their upcoming share float. I would put the whole concept right up there with the run your car on water schemes that crop up on a regular basis. I see Plod has just said the same thing in less words :) |

As a country we're among the world's worst naysayers, detractors when it comes to anything else than the ABs, Phar Lap, and Pavlovas. Cmon guys, credit where it's due. We pride ourselves on innovation and adventure - let's stop sounding like a reprise of the first opinions about horseless carriages et al. :D |

I would put the whole concept right up there with the run your car on water schemes that crop up on a regular basis. Considering the rate of climb it wouldn't take long to get over the 100 foot mark. They had to slow it down so the chopper could keep up. It would be interesting to know what it's true ceiling was. Comparing it to "run your car on water schemes" is rather pathetic. |
