1207582 2011-06-09 21:12:00 Yeah that's why having something that'll upload to a remote FTP site instantly is a good idea ;) Chilling_Silence (9)
1207583 2011-06-10 04:53:00 Certainly looks interesting. Brings up an interesting point though - the computing power required to run that (or any other) system. The PC we have at the moment is old and underpowered. Add upgrade costs and the economics change.

I run it on an old laptop at home with a built in webcam. Just leave it facing the front door / living room when I leave home for the day. Have it setup to email me any alerts when any of the rules are broken (so far only caught the cat). Works really well and was super simple to setup.

1207584 2011-06-10 06:36:00 I'm sure that would be adequate for some setups. I was referring specifically to the Vitamin D product that Burnzee linked to. Tony (4941)

According to TV News tonight, there's no better time for the New Zealand Consumer . Our dollar is breaking new high records . So ditch the old chugger and go buy a brand new computer . If you want a decent security system it's going to cost . Be a good time to get Vitamin D .

They are liable to nick the PC too as that web cam is tethered so close to it .

Assuming Vitamin D had been installed, it's already too late for the bad guy . A photo has been taken and dispatched to g mail/hot mail and/or sent to your mobile . Remember a story in the local paper of this very scenario happening in the Hutt Valley . Bear in mind too, computer based security systems are in addition to, not instead of, reasonable hardware based, (padlocks, etc), security procedures . Usb Standards limit the length of cable between the camera/s and the computer so this could be a factor too .

In Zoneminder you can set it so that the cat will not set it off.

You still haven't got your PC though.
With Zoneminder you can monitor your setup remotely and even with quite a few cell phones.

1207588 2011-06-13 07:31:00 Just gave Vitamin D a whirl. For a single camera, it's pretty choice!! :D

Very easy to setup and use too.

I've just installed Zoneminder and would like to get hold of a few different cameras to give it a test but I'm very impressed with the way it works with my webcam.
