1234206 2011-10-05 01:32:00 The dells dont have that stupid network management they bundle in with some machines do they ?? That can sometimes cause endless networking problems as it over rides windows networking settings :2cents:

Edited: Just found somethings to try - Have a read here (social.technet.microsoft.com)

1234207 2011-10-05 01:53:00 Forget that link above, just tried it and didn't work, I replicated the problem again by removing the password, but those setting didn't allow access :(

Unless you can replicate it at your workshop /place, so it could be sorted and save face so to speak, I'd just use the user name and password, ticking remember credentials, then you wont be prompted.

1234208 2011-10-05 23:01:00 That link is where I got the policy edits from. Yea, made no difference in spite of it looking to answer the problem.

The remember user/pwd didn't stick after a reboot so another failure!

Never mind, networking the printer directly saves having to see it via a share. But I HATE being beaten!!!!!!

I might get one of the offending boxes home over a weekend to have a good go at it. Probably work no probs here! Initially, I had one home and it could see all my shares no problem but I don't think I tried looking for its shares.

Cheers.

1234209 2011-10-05 23:26:00 Dont suppose the printer thats shared is network capable is it ( be to easy a solution) If it were, then connecting to the router would eliminate problem completely.

The down side to being a shared printer from a PC is if the PC crashes, shuts down or what ever no one could print.

If its not Ethernet capable, maybe a print server Something like this (www.ascent.co.nz) should work.

1234210 2011-10-08 01:51:00 Yes, it is a network ptr (HP 2600n) and that's what I did - moved the router to allow for a cable connection. The 2600n is at end-of-life so guess I will have another round of driver installs soon! linw (53)
1234211 2011-10-12 22:50:00 To round this thread off I am now pretty sure what the real problem is.

In my (lack of?) wisdom the new W7 machines have the same organisation oriented userid instead of personal names. But the passwords are different. So the authentication procedure says, ah, got a userid match but the password is wrong so it then prompts for userid and password. It doesn't fall back to the anonymous login if there is a common user.

Easiest solution in this case is to set all passwords to the same one. Another solution would have been to create an additional common account/password on each comp.

Also explains why the replaced XP machines could share the printer. There was no userid match so they used the anonymous/guest account which was indeed active on the new W7 Pro machines..

Thanks to WT for hangin' in there.
