Neighbors used to live off that - back around year 2000. Pelts sold for $5 each, and they would trap extensively and live quite happily on the profits. Then the prices dropped to less than $2 a pelt and they stopped. That has always been the case. My brother years ago had 113 skins he sent away. The year before he would have got a few hundred dollars but on that year he only got about $20. The trouble with putting a bounty on them is that some will basically farm them so that they have an ongoing income whereas we need total eradication. I would certainly prefer them to use something other than 1080 but at the moment it is the most effective. I haven't heard lately how they are getting on with the research into making the possum sterile to finish them off. |

Where access too difficult then there is a case for the use of 1080.:2cents: Great opportunity to put some of the unemployed to good use but knowing some of them we would spend more money on rescuing them than killing possums.:) |

| 1207631 | 2011-06-08 22:06:00 | The common brushtail possum was introduced to New Zealand by European settlers in an attempt to establish a fur industry. The possums do quite a bit of damage to our native forests and are also carriers of TB. They have thrived in the New Zealand bush. While it is possums, rats and stoats that are targeted by the poisoning, many native birds, pets, and recreationally valued game animals are killed by it also.1080 may be an effective means of controlling the possum, rats and stoats but I wish that they had another option. |
