1206913 2011-06-07 14:36:00 Was Metla found or even spotted on the trip?

I noticed you said something about cars coming in the opposite direction. Are you actually allowed to drive against traffic? Assuming you are on a bicycle - right?

Whew! That's dangerous - and besides, it's against the law here in the States, you are a vehicle and as such you must obey all vehicular laws too.

Interesting though. 'Patting sheep' must be a thrill for an Upsidedowner - I know it would for me.

Wait - you mean 'petting' right? Somehow 'patting' isn't quite the word I'd use.

Metla was back in Wanganui for the weekend so no.
The Napier to Gisborne road is a winding road with lots of corners which is good fun on a motor bike but a lot of people have the horrible habit of cutting corners which creates a bit more excitement than needed.:D

1206915 2011-06-09 04:05:00 "Petting" is an Americanism, usually referring to children's zoos or the heavy kind between two (or more) consenting adults. ;)

Does "patting" have an American translation that doesn't relate to touching a living being in some way?

Or is it a null word, meaningless to the average American?

1206916 2011-06-09 04:49:00 'Patting' has the connotation of gently tapping someone on the head with an open hand or something being affectionately done by an open hand by another animal higher on the food chain, conferring rights and/or tribal/social privileges and acceptance .

It could also be a baking/cooking instruction too:::

'I PAT the flour into a small cakes before I bake them' kinda thing-y . See?

One can also 'pat' powder upon themselves, as a woman would use a powder puff to apply foundation - when women wore makeup, that was .

'Petting' has several connotations:

1) To embrace and fondle a person of the opposite sex, usually in the back seat of their father's 1959 Buick .
3) To show affection for an animal eg: dog, cat, penguin .

1206919 2011-06-09 05:44:00 You chaps have 1959 Buicks too?

No, we have a word that precludes that, called taste.

I used to think that way, too. But after a disastrous run with a XJ6C, Alfa Romeo and Porsche (their engineering too subtle for American mechanics used to big Detroit engine blocks), I relented and bought one of the truly nicest cars I've ever owned. A '78 (because that was 1978) Oldsmobile Toronado.

I called her Stephanie after my then girlfriend. They were both sexy, fast, and sultry. Comfort? We won't go there ;)
